The core of the ALSAMP retention initiative is the ALSAMP Drop-In Center, a place on each campus equipped with computer technology where students go to receive tutoring and skills reinforcement in mathematics, science and engineering. Each ALSAMP Scholar is required to spend at least five hours per week studying and assisting students to improve their competence in mathematics, science, and engineering. Moreover, students meet in these centers to participate in group study sessions. The Drop-In Centers are staffed by graduate students, student tutors, ALSAMP Scholars or faculty and may employ a part-time or full-time director.
