UAB National Alumni Society Annual Traditions
Building Decoration Competition
Schools and groups on UAB's campus decorate the exterior of their respective buildings to showcase the selected homecoming theme and ignite spirit across campus. Each building is judged on appearance, creativity, effort, use of Homecoming theme and group participation. A panel of judges tours campus to judge the buildings and the winners are announced on Saturday in Blazer Village at Legion Field prior to the Homecoming game.
Gurney Derby Competition
The Gurney Derby is one of the most popular Homecoming week traditions. Teams of four, each must have two men and two women, race down a stretch of 13th Street South and back to the starting line while pushing a "passenger" on old hospital gurneys. Awards are given for 1st and 2nd place, best-dressed gurney, most creative "passenger", and the dead last award.
Parade Float Competition
Each year, the UAB National Alumni Society provides a judging panel that evaluates the homecoming parade floats during the annual parade traditionally held on Friday before the homecoming game. The floats are judged on appearance, creativity, effort, utilization of Homecoming theme and participation. The awards include most creative float design, best use of Homecoming theme, and best display of Blazer spirit.
Blazer Village Spirit Competition
During the Blazer Village festivities prior to the homecoming game the UAB National Alumni Society judges spend time visiting tailgates and tents of schools and groups that are set up for the Homecoming game. Each group is judged on tailgate appearance, creativity, effort, utilization of homecoming theme and participation. The goal of each group is to display UAB spirit via the decorations on and around their tailgate or tent.
Game Day Tailgate at Blazer Village
The National Alumni Society hosts a tailgate in Blazer Village at Legion Field prior to the homecoming game. UAB alumni, students, and fans are invited to attend the tailgate. Award winners will be announced in the tent for various spirit competitions throughout the week, including the Building Decoration Competition, Parade Float Competition, and Blazer Village Spirit Competition.
Mr. & Ms. UAB Scholarship Competition
The presentation of the winners of the Mr. & Ms. UAB Scholarship competition will be announced during halftime of the homecoming game. Mr. & Ms. UAB will be crowned and each will receive a $2,500 scholarship. The first alternates will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.
