What is your favorite UAB memory? The fellowship developed by the “all nighters in the labs,” studying with friends with common goals, and the personal satisfaction with getting a circuit you designed to work or a program to run.
How has UAB impacted your life? UAB provided me a solid academic foundation, which made a successful professional career possible.
What made you choose your current profession? I like to solve problems; and that’s what engineering is all about.
What would you do if you were given more time in each day? Wow! That’s a tough question. I have so many hobbies. I like to hunt and fish whenever I get a chance.
What invention have you seen in your lifetime that you believe has been the most important? Electricity – just kidding. I guess it was more the ubiquitous nature of the internet more so than the invention itself. People are communicating at a phenomenal rate. Communication is more important than most people realize. Most problems are solved, and battles won by the team that can communicate.
If you could have 3 wishes, what would they be? Peace, enlightenment, and health for all.
If you could go back to any age…which age and why? I would go back to the important days; the day I met my wife, the days my three children were born.
Which historical figure do you most identify with and why? Leonardo da Vinci – He was the ultimate Renaissance man. da Vinci had a broad background, knowledge, and interest in everything from art to mechanics, engineering, and physics. da Vinci was a true innovator and contributor to society, as well as the arts and sciences.
If you had the power to solve one, and only one, problem in the world…what would it be and why? Tolerance – Far too much time, energy, money, and lives are wasted in the world, due to intolerance of others. Hopefully, these wasted resources could be focused to solve the world’s other problems.
What natural gift would you most like to possess? Wisdom.
What trait(s) do you most value in your friends? Loyalty, intelligence, and compassion.
Who would you want to portray you in a film about your life? One of my sons. I’m not sure if anyone would go to see the film though.
What is your motto? Be prepared.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received? Life is all about integrity. No matter what hurdles you encounter or hardships you endure, integrity is the only thing in life you and you alone control. No one can take your integrity. – Ted C. Kennedy, founder BE&K Construction, 1930-2012
If you could start a charity or non-profit organization, what would it be and why? It would be something to help children. Nothing is more heart breaking than children in need.

Graduation Year: 2014
Major: Biomedical Engineering
Hometown: Decatur Alabama
Why did you choose to attend UAB? I came to UAB because it offered Biomedical Engineering as a Major
Who is the best professor that you have had at UAB so far and why? One of the best professors I have ever had has got to be Dr. Lee Moradi. I had him this past semester for Dynamics. Even though it was an 8AM class he always kept the class interesting and he is a funny professor. He genuinely cared about you and if you needed help then he was there.
What is your favorite UAB memory? The UAB vs. Troy football game my freshman year has got to be my favorite memory. We were down 23 nothing before halftime and I was ready to leave. My friend convinced me to stay until the end of the game and we ended up winning on a 44-yard hailmary pass to end the game! It goes to show that you should never stop believing in your school. You never know what could happen.
What is your current state of mind? All of the hard work, blood, sweat, and tears I am putting in now will pay off for me in the future.
What do you do for fun? I enjoy running. It is a way for me to clear my mind and relieve stress. I also enjoy playing Ping-Pong, and cricket!
Who are your heroes in real life? I look up to my parents, they have put in so much work to get to where they are and I want to make their lives better in the future. I also look up to a former professor here at UAB, Dr. Sanjay Singh. He is so full of enthusiasm and he just energizes those around him. I hope to one day be a little bit like him.
If you were given more time in each day, what would you do? I would like to spend the time helping others. I value community service, but since my schedule is so busy, I hardly ever have time to help out.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be? My super power would be to stop time. I would be able to get so much accomplished and done if time wasn’t a limiting factor.
What is the best invention of your lifetime and why? Even though it was a little bit before my time, it didn’t get popular until after I was born. I would have to say the internet. I rely on the Internet so much and I do not now where we would be as a society today without it. I would actually have to go to the library for information instead of being able to Google it.
What are your future goals? My future goal is to become a doctor. I may possible pursue an MD/PHD. I hope to live a satisfactory life and eventually go back to my home country, India to help those less fortunate than me.
What would be your ultimate dream job? My ultimate dream job would be a world-renowned food critique. How awesome would it be to go all around the world and get to eat and critique restaurants?
If you had a theme song, what would it be? Count On Me by Bruno Mars
If you had the power to solve one, and only one, problem in the world…what would it be and why? I would solve all of the world conflicts. If people would just get along then the world would be better place.
If someone wrote a biography about you, what would the title be? Dhruv Patel, on a Mission to Change the World.
