Class of 2016The UAB National Alumni Society is proud to partner with our schools and colleges in raising over one million dollars from alumni to provide student scholarships. The society is very proud to offer much-needed scholarship assistance to incoming freshman, transfer students, graduate students, upperclassmen and international students.

Increasing NAS scholarships is an important goal of the UAB National Alumni Society, as it allows us to assist UAB students who will later become future alumni. We have great momentum in this area and have continually increased the number of scholarships we offer each year.

UAB National Alumni Society Scholarship Listing

All deadlines have passed for 2016 NAS Scholarships.

Alys Robinson Stephens Alumni Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1999 with funds from the Alumni Society Golf Tournament and the Alumni Casino Night. The Society supported the establishment of this scholarship in order to assist with the recruitment of talented performing student artists to UAB.

Requirements
  1. Must be a high school graduate.
  2. Must be accepted to UAB.
Application
There are no applications for this scholarship. The scholarship is widely publicized via state and national music publications, and posters are mailed to all music teachers.

Selection
Via audition and testing, the student must prove to be of substantial talent and show promise for continued excellence in music. There will be a strong focus on incoming freshmen; however, current UAB students and transfer students are eligible to apply.

Award
This is a one-time $1,000 scholarship.

Deisbursement
The funds are disbursed prior to the beginning of the fall semester.

Compass Bank Mortgage Graduate Student Scholarship

The BBVA Compass Mortgage Financial Services Endowed Award in Graduate Education was established through generous gifts from the UAB National Alumni Society to be used for the purpose of creating an endowed graduate student award fund at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Spendable earnings from the BBVA Compass Mortgage Financial Services Endowed Award in Graduate Education fund will be used to provide financial assistance to exceptional students who are enrolled in a UAB graduate program.

Guidelines
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the BBVA Compass Mortgage Financial Services Endowed Award in Graduate Education.

Applicants must:
  • Be currently enrolled in, or admitted to, a degree-granting program in the Graduate School at UAB for Fall 2016,
  • Demonstrate solid academic achievement and have earned at least a grade point average of 3.2 in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Complete the scholarship application and return it to the office of the Graduate School Dean in Lister Hill Library, by the announced deadline,
  • Seek two letters of recommendation from individuals who are acquainted with the student’s research and academic achievements,
  • Compose a 2-page essay on the topic “What I have accomplished to date in terms of my scholarly activity as a graduate student at UAB, and why the scholarly contributions I have made are important.”
(Note: Applicants should describe scholarly contributions in their respective field of endeavor. All local presentations, as well as presentations at professional meetings and formal publications of any kind should be documented.)

Selection
The selection committee will select the recipient based on the student’s academic merit, letters of recommendation and essay. There are no restrictions to applicants based on sex, race, nationality, country of origin, physical disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.

Awarding
Applicants will be notified via letter regarding their status after the selection committee has met. This is an annual award valued at $2,500 that may be reapplied for in subsequent years as long as the eligibility criteria are met.

The deadline to apply for the Compass Bank Mortgage Student Scholarship is Friday, March 3, 2017.

Dean's Scholarships

This scholarship will provide each school/discipline scholarship funds annually. This includes 10 schools and honors programs.

Selection
The selection and award for the recipient(s) are at each Dean's or Director's discretion.

Award
Funds are disbursed at the beginning of the fall semester.

Application
Deans or Directors will select nominees for this scholarship.

Distinguished Alumni Scholarship

The Student Relations Committee established a new scholarship endowment in 1994 to honor the National Alumni Society’s Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients. Funds for the establishment of this endowment were generated by the NAS’s special fundraising events and other gifts. Each year, a one-time scholarship of $4,000 is awarded to a student in honor of the recipient and must be enrolled in the school or course of study of the recipient. This year, the Distinguished Alumni Scholarship will be awarded to a student in the School of Health Professions.

Will Ferniany, Ph.D. received his Master of Science in Hospital Health Administration from the School of Health Professions in 1975 and his doctorate in Administration and Health Services in 1984. Dr. Ferniany has served as CEO of the UAB Health System since 2008 and has guided the hospital to a top 50 national ranking and constant recognition as one of the best in the U.S. He has been named one of "Birmingham's Most Influential" by the Birmingham Business Journal and a "Hospital and Health System CEO to Know" by the national respected Becker's Hospital Review.

Requirements
Applicants must:
  • Demonstrate leadership abilities while at UAB,
  • Demonstrate community involvement,
  • Provide two letters of recommendation,
  • Be a history student in the School of Health Professions,
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.5,
  • Have the possibility of becoming an active and supporting alumnus/na,
  • Distinguished Alumni Scholarship applications can be completed here.
Selection
The Office of Alumni Affairs will work with the department or area in the field of study of the current distinguished alumnus/na. The contact in the school will collect the applications and work with the dean and the recipient of the award. Six students will be forwarded to the Office of Alumni Affairs and interviewed by a panel of UAB alumni, faculty and staff.

Award
The recipients of this $4,000 award will receive a non-renewable, one-time disbursement at the beginning of the fall semester for tuition and fess only. No cash disbursements are allowed.

The deadline to apply for the Distinguished Alumni Scholarship is Friday, March 3, 2017.

Dr. Charles A. McCallum International Scholarship

The UAB National Alumni Society Charles A. McCallum International Scholarship was established through generous gifts from the McCallum family to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The Scholarship will be used to assist deserving international students who have current citizenship in Thailand or Taiwan.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB National Alumni Society Charles A. McCallum International Scholarship.

Applicants must:
  • Plan to attend UAB through the fall semester after being selected,
  • Demonstrate solid academic achievement and have earned at least an overall grade point average of 3.5 in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Have current citizenship in either Thailand or Taiwan,
  • Compose a brief statement describing why you wish to be considered for this scholarship,
  • Dr. Charles A. McCallum International Scholarships can be completed here.
Selection
Selection will be based on an application, essay and interview. A committee of at least five and no more than seven individuals selected by the UAB Center for International Programs shall select the recipient. This committee should include at least one representative from the National Alumni Society's Board of Directors. Selections should not be made prior to May 1 and should be completed at least four weeks prior to the beginning of fall semester.

Award
This is a one-time award valued at $1,000. Recipients are eligible to apply for the award in subsequent years as long as the recipient maintains full-time enrollment and progress toward completion of degree.

The deadline to apply for the Dr. Charles A. McCallum International Scholarship is Friday, March 3, 2017.

Joseph F. Volker Alumni Scholarship

The Joseph F. Volker UAB National Alumni Society Scholarship was established through generous gifts from the UAB National Alumni Society to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The Scholarship will be used to assist deserving students who are enrolled at UAB.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the Joseph F. Volker UAB National Alumni Society Scholarship.

Applicants must:
  • Demonstrate leadership abilities during college enrollment, either academic, extra-curricular, or job oriented,
  • Be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in all course work completed,
  • Have proof of full-time enrollment as determined by the registrar's office,
  • Be a full-time sophomore, junior, senior, graduate or transfer student,
  • Compose and submit a 500-600 word, typed statement that outlines "what are your career goals and why did you choose your particular field of study,"
  • And Joseph F. Volker Alumni Scholarship applications must be completed here.
Selection
The selection committee will select the recipient based on the above guidelines. The committee will include representatives from the National Alumni Society, and the donor(s). Applicants will be notified via e-mail regarding their status after the selection committee has met.

Award
These shall be one-time awards, with the dollar amount and number of awards being based on the available funds each year. The amount of the award is $3500 per student.

License to Learn Scholarships

The UAB National Alumni Society License to Learn Scholarship was established through the UAB National Alumni Society to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB National Alumni Society License to Learn Scholarship.

Applicants must:
  • Be a resident of the State of Alabama and must have a completed application on file,
  • Be enrolled on at least a part-time basis. The student must be enrolled both semesters in an academic year and maintain an overall 3.0 GPA. The award is for undergraduate students who are transfer students or currently enrolled UAB students,
  • Have an existing GPA of at least 3.0 from prior college or high school experience. If the student previously held poor academic standing, then the student must have completed at least twelve credit hours at UAB and have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA,
  • Financial need should be demonstrated using the standards of the Office of Financial Aid,
  • Compose short essay (250-300 words) on how this scholarship would make a different in your life,
  • And License to Learn Scholarship applications must be completed through B Smart.
Selection
The selection committee will select the recipient based on the above guidelines. The committee will include representatives from the National Alumni Society. Applicants will be notified via e-mail regarding their status after the selection committee has met.

Award
This is an annual award and is not renewable. This is a $3000 award. Half will be paid before the fall semester and the other half before the spring semester. This scholarship will be applied toward the recipient’s tuition and fees. Any funds in excess of the amount required for tuition and fees may be disbursed to the student for books, supplies, room and board, or other school-related expenses.

The deadline to apply for the License to Learn Scholarship is Friday, February 3, 2017.

Lois & Barry Luther National Alumni Society Endowed Nursing Scholarship

The Lois and Barry Luther UAB National Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship was established through generous gifts from Lois and Barry Luther to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The Scholarship will be used to assist deserving students who are accepted to the School of Nursing at UAB.

Requirements
Applicants must:
  • Be undergraduate students currently admitted to a degree-granting program in the School of Nursing at UAB,
  • Demonstrate solid academic achievement and have earned at least an overall grade point average of 2.5 in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Do not have to qualify for federal assistance to be considered for this award,
  • Compose a brief statement (minimum of 250-500 words) describing your career objectives,
  • And Lois & Barry Luther National Alumni Society Endowed Nursing Scholarships must be completed through B Smart.
Selection
The selection committee will select the recipient based on the above guidelines. The committee will include representatives from the National Alumni Society, and the donor(s). Applicants will be notified via e-mail regarding their status after the selection committee has met.

Award
This is a one-time award valued at $1,250. Recipients are eligible to apply for the award in subsequent years as long as the recipient maintains full-time enrollment and progress toward completion of degree.

Mobolaji O. Kukoyi, P.E., UAB National Alumni Society Scholar Award

The Mobolaji O. Kukoyi, P.E., National Alumni Society Scholar Award was established through generous gifts from Mobolaji O. Kukoyi to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the Mobolaji O. Kukoyi, P.E., UAB National Alumni Society Scholar Award.

Applicants must:
  • In order to promote diversity in both gender and race in the civil engineering profession, it is the donor’s desire to support minority students such as, Native American, Asian or Pacific Islander, African American, Hispanic and Women,
  • Be of at least sophomore standing and currently enrolled as a full-time student in a degree-granting program within the UAB Department of Civil Engineering in spring and fall of 2015,
  • Demonstrate solid academic achievement and have earned at least a grade point average of 3.0 in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Be available to interview with the selected scholarship committee,
  • Compose a brief statement (minimum of 250 words) describing your career objectives,
  • Mobolaji O. Kukoyi, P.E., UAB National Alumni Scholar Award applications can be completed here.
Selection
The selection committee will select the recipient based on the above guidelines. The committee will include representatives from the National Alumni Society, the Department of Civil Engineering, and the donor or his designee. Applicants will be notified via e-mail regarding their status after the selection committee has met.

NAS Endowed Scholarship

The UAB National Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship was established through the UAB National Alumni Society to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB National Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship.

Applicants must:
  • Be currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program (undergraduate or graduate) at UAB,
  • Demonstrate solid academic promise and achievement and have earned at least an overall 3.0 grade point average in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Be the first in their family to attend college, and the Fund shall provide support to student on the basis of merit,
  • Submit applications for consideration should be submitted to the appropriate University office by the announced deadline, and selection of scholarship recipients will be made by a selection committee in accordance with these guidelines. The University will be solely responsible for the final selection of the recipients,
  • Compose a 500-600 word statement on how the applicants degree from UAB will help them achieve their career goals,
  • NAS Endowed Scholarship applications can be completed here.

NAS Past President's Scholarship

The UAB National Alumni Society Past Presidents Endowed Scholarship was established through the UAB National Alumni Society to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB National Alumni Society Past Presidents Endowed Scholarship.

Applicants must:
  • Be currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program (undergraduate or graduate) at UAB,
  • Demonstrate solid academic promise and achievement and have earned at least an overall 3.0 grade point average in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Exhibit leadership and excellence both inside and outside of the classroom, and the Fund shall provide support to student on the basis of merit,
  • Compose a 500-600 word statement on what the applicants UAB degree will mean to them,
  • Applications for consideration should be submitted to the appropriate University office by the announced deadline, and selection of scholarship recipients will be made by a selection committee in accordance with these guidelines. The University will be solely responsible for the final selection of the recipients,
  • NAS Past President's Scholarship applications can be completed here.

National Alumni Society Student of Employee Endowed Scholarship

Generous gifts from the UAB National Alumni Society will be used for the purpose of creating an endowed student award fund at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Spendable earnings from the UAB National Alumni Society Employee Endowed Scholarship fund will be used to assist exceptional incoming freshman who are the children of UAB faculty and staff that are active members of the UAB National Alumni Society.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB National Alumni Society Employee Endowed Scholarship.

Applicants must:
  • Be admitted to UAB,
  • Be a first-time entering freshman. The scholarship is not open to transfer students or graduate school students. Students must attend UAB immediately following graduation from high school,
  • Demonstrate leadership, extra-curricular activity and community service during high school,
  • Parent must be an active member of the UAB National Alumni Society and be currently employed by UAB on a full-time basis. (Preference will be given on the basis of number of years of membership in the UAB National Alumni Society),
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.5 in order to keep the scholarship, Preference will be given to students with an ACT score of 22 or higher,
  • Be enrolled full time,
  • Include a 250-350 word, typed essay that answers the following question: “How do you plan to use your UAB degree to improve society in everyday life?"
  • And National Alumni Society Student of Employee Endowed Scholarship applications must be completed through B Smart.
Selection
The selection committee shall consider academic performance, leadership, and extra-curricular activity in making their selection. The committee shall determine the relative weight given to each criterion. There are no restrictions to applicants based on sex, race, nationality, country of origin, physical disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.

Award
This is a one-time non-renewable scholarship valued at $1,000 per year. Funds will be disbursed prior to the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

Applicants will be notified via e-mail regarding their status after the selection committee has met.

The deadline to apply for the National Alumni Society Student of Employee Endowed Scholarship is Friday, February 3, 2017.

National Alumni Society Women's Athletic Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the NAS to support female athletes.

Selection
Selection will be at the Athletics Director's discretion to a female student athlete.

Award
One-time scholarship of $1,000 awarded annually.

Patsy W. Collat Endowed Scholarship in Neuroscience

The UAB National Alumni Society Patsy W. Collat Endowed Scholarship in Neuroscience was established through the generous gifts from Joy D. and James W. Smith to be used for the purpose of creative a sponsored student award at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), in memory of Patsy W. Collat. The scholarship will be used to assist deserving students at UAB.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB NAS Patsy W. Collat Endowed Scholarship in Neuroscience:
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program in the Neuroscience Undergraduate Program in the Department of Psychology within the College of Arts and Sciences,
  • Applicants should demonstrate solid academic promise and achievement and have earned at least an overall GPA of 3.0 in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Applicants must be female,
  • Applicants are required to submit a personal statement, of at least 250 words and not to exceed 500 words, on what you plan to do with your Neuroscience degree,
  • Patsy W. Collat Endowed Scholarship in Neuroscience applications must be completed through B Smart.
Selection
The selection committee will select the recipient based on the above guidelines. The committee will include representatives from the UAB National Alumni Society, and the donor(s). Applicants will be notified via e-mail regarding their status after the selection committee has met.

Award
This is a one-time award valued at $1,250. Recipients are eligible to apply for the award in subsequent years as long as they continue to meet the requirements outlined hear in.

Printella Ridgeway-Thomas, M.D., NAS Endowed Scholarship

Printella Ridgeway-Thomas, M.D., an alumna of The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and current member of the Board of Directors for the UAB National Alumni Society, is making generous gifts for the purpose of creating an endowed scholarship at the University. Spendable earnings from the Printella Ridgeway-Thomas, M.D., National Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship will be used to assist deserving students who are enrolled at UAB.

UAB is extremely proud of the diverse nature of its campus with great representation from people of many ethnic backgrounds, each of whom brings a different and important perspective to the classroom and to campus life. It is the wish of Dr. Thomas to support this diverse campus culture by supporting African-American students from Alabama’s Black Belt, whose population is underrepresented on our campus, in our state, and in advanced professionals.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the Printella Ridgeway-Thomas, M.D., National Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship:

Applicants must:
  • Be currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program at UAB,
  • First preference will be given to entering first-year undergraduate students who are African-American and who are from the Black Belt region of Alabama, including the counties of Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Choctaw, Crenshaw, Dallas, Greene, Hale, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Russell, Sumter, and Wilcox,
  • Demonstrate solid academic promise and achievement and have earned a score of at least a 24 on the ACT (or equivalent alternative college entrance exam) and an overall 3.2 grade point average in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Also demonstrate financial need as determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid,
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated community service,
  • Applications for consideration should be submitted to the appropriate University office by the announced deadline, and selection of scholarship recipients will be made by a selection committee in accordance with these guidelines. The University will be solely responsible for the final selection of the recipients,

The UAB National Alumni Society Ray L. Watts, M.D., Endowed Award was established through generous gifts to the UAB NAS to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The Scholarship will be used to assist deserving students who are accepted to the School of Engineering at UAB.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB National Alumni Society Ray L. Watts, M.D., Endowed Award.

Applicants must:
  • Be an undergraduate currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program in the School of Engineering at the University,
  • Demonstrate solid academic promise and achievement and have earned at least an overall 3.2 grade point average in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Submit a personal statement, of at least 300 words and not to exceed 500 words, on what you plan to do with your Engineering degree,
  • And Ray L. Watts, M.D., National Alumin Society Endowed Award applications must be completed through B Smart.
Selection
The selection committee will select the recipient based on the above guidelines. The committee will include representatives from the National Alumni Society, and the donor(s). Applicants will be notified via e-mail regarding their status after the selection committee has met.

Student Alumni Society Scholarship

The UAB NAS Student Alumni Society Scholarship was established through the UAB National Alumni Society to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), to a member of the Student Alumni Society. The scholarships will be based on both merit and need.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB NAS Student Alumni Society Scholarship.

Applicants must:
  • Be a resident of the State of Alabama and must have a completed application on file,
  • Be enrolled on a full-time basis. The student must be enrolled both semesters in an academic year and maintain an overall 3.0 GPA. The award is for undergraduate and graduate students who are transfer students or currently enrolled UAB students and are current members of the Student Alumni Society,

UAB NAS Brandon Keith Jacobs Memorial Scholarship

The UAB NAS Brandon Keith Jacobs Memorial Scholarship was established through generous gifts from Pamela and Bryan Jacobs to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), in memory of their son and UAB student Brandon Keith Jacobs, who tragically passed away while enjoying his undergraduate college years at UAB. The Scholarship will be used to assist deserving students who are accepted to the School of Engineering/Honors College at UAB.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB NAS Brandon Keith Jacobs Memorial Scholarship.

Applicants must:
  • Be an undergraduate currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program in the School of Engineering at the University,
  • Demonstrate solid academic promise and achievement and have earned at least an overall 2.8 grade point average in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Have completed at least one full academic year at the University and be admitted to the UAB Honors College,
  • Submit a personal statement, of at least 500 words and not to exceed 1,000 words, on what this scholarship funding would mean to them,
  • And, UAB NAS Brandon Keith Jacobs Memorial Scholarship applications must be completed through B Smart.
Selection
The selection committee will select the recipient based on the above guidelines. The committee will include representatives from the National Alumni Society, and the donor(s). Applicants will be notified via e-mail regarding their status after the selection committee has met.

Award
This is a one-time award valued at $2,000. Recipients are eligible to apply for the award in subsequent years as long as the recipient maintains full-time enrollment and progress toward completion of degree.

UAB National Alumni Society Education Abroad Endowed Scholarship

The UAB National Alumni Society Education Abroad Endowed Scholarship was established through the UAB National Alumni Society to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Requirements
The UAB National Alumni Society Education Abroad Endowed Scholarship was established through the UAB National Alumni Society to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Applicants must:
  • Be currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program (undergraduate or graduate) at UAB,
  • Demonstrate solid academic promise and achievement and have earned at least an overall 3.0 grade point average in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Be seeking education abroad opportunities, and the Fund shall provide support to students on the basis of merit,
  • Compose a 500-600 word statement on how studying abroad will help them achieve their career goals,
  • Applications for consideration should be submitted to the appropriate University office by the announced deadline, and selection of scholarship recipients will be made by a selection committee in accordance with these guidelines. The University will be solely responsible for the final selection of the recipients,

UAB National Alumni Society Hafiz Chandiwala Scholar Award

The UAB National Alumni Society Hafiz Chandiwala Scholar Award was established through generous gifts from Hafiz Chandiwala to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The Scholarship will be used to assist deserving students who are currently enrolled in or accepted to the Collat School of Business.

Requirements

The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB National Alumni Society Hafiz Chandiwala Scholar Award.

Applicants must:

  • Be an undergraduate currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program in the Collat School of Business.
  • Demonstrate solid academic promise and achievement and have earned at least an overall 3.0 grade point average in coursework completed prior to the time of application.
  • Provide documentation that a part-time job is held (at least 20 hours per week).
  • Include a letter from your employer with contact information for verification.
  • Applicants are required to submit a personal statement, of at least 300 words and not to exceed 500 words, on what this scholarship funding would mean to them.
  • And completed applications must be returned to the UAB Alumni House, 1301 10th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35294 by the deadline.

The UAB National Alumni Society Mobola Kukoyi Scholar Award was established through generous gifts from Mobola Kukoyi to be used for the purpose of creating a sponsored student award at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). This Scholarship will be used to assist deserving international students.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB National Alumni Society Mobola Kukoyi Scholar Award.

Applicants must:
  • Be an international student,
  • Plan to attend UAB through the fall semester after being selected,
  • Demonstrate solid academic achievement and have earned at least an overall grade point average of 3.0 in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities and community service,
  • Compose a brief statement describing why you wish to be considered for this scholarship,
  • Complete the scholarship application and return it to the Smolian International House, 1600 10th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35294-1280. Applications can be downloaded when available.

Virginia D. Gauld National Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship

The Virginia D. Gauld National Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship was established through a gift made by the UAB National Alumni Society and contributions from friends, family, and admirers of Dr. Gauld.

During her nearly 30-year tenure at UAB, she enjoyed working with students as a student recruiter and served for 16 years as the Vice President of Student Affairs. Dr. Gauld acted as the catalyst to create projects such as the Campus Recreation Center and the Commons on the Green dining facility. In her role, her main focus was to always to do what was best for the students. This scholarship has been created to allow her legacy to live on through a deserving student who, like Dr. Gauld, has a passion for service in the community and especially at UAB.

Requirements
Applicants must:
  • Be undergraduate students currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UAB,
  • Be of at least Junior-standing,
  • Demonstrate solid academic achievement and have earned at least a grade point average of 2.0 in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to service at UAB and in the community,
  • Seek two letters of recommendation- one from a UAB administrator or faculty member who is acquainted with the student's service on campus and the other from someone who is familiar with the student's service in the community,
  • Virginia D. Gauld National Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship applications can be completed through B Smart,
  • And compose a 2-page essay on the topic "How have you been impacted by your service to UAB and the community?" (Note: Applicant is encouraged to demonstrate his/her service within the campus and community populations. Participation in organizations and activities promoting the applicant's service should be outlined in this essay.)

The selection committee will select the recipient based on the student's service at UAB and in the community, letters of recommendation, essay, and interview. There are no restrictions to applicants based on sex, race, nationality, country of origin, physical disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.

This is an annual award valued at $1,000 that may be reapplied for in subsequent years as long as the criteria are met.

W. Sanders Murell Legacy Scholarship

This scholarship was renamed in honor of W. Sanders (Sandy) Murell, the first Director of Alumni Affairs for The University of Alabama at Birmingham and the first Executive Director of the UAB National Alumni Society.

During his 26-year career with UAB, Mr. Murell worked tirelessly to increase alumni participation in University life and to promote membership in the UAB National Alumni Society. Following his retirement in 2003, the Board of Directors voted to name these significant scholarships in his honor as a way of encouraging children of UAB graduates to follow in their parent's footsteps by attending the University.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the UAB National Alumni Society W. Sanders Murell Legacy Scholarship.

Applicants must:
  • Be admitted to UAB,
  • Be an entering freshman. The scholarship is not open to transfer students or graduate school students,
  • Attend UAB immediately following graduation from high school. Demonstrated leadership, extra-curricular activity and community service during high school,
  • Parent must hold an undergraduate, graduate or professional degree from UAB and be an active member of the UAB National Alumni Society. Preference will be given on the basis of number of years of membership in the UAB National Alumni Society,
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.5 in order to keep the scholarship. Preference will be given to students with an ACT score of 25 or higher,
  • Be enrolled on a full-time basis,
  • Include a 250-350 word typed essay that answers the following question: “Why did you decide to attend UAB and how will your decision to attend UAB help you achieve your career goals?” And, W. Sanders Murell Legacy Scholarship applications must be completed through B Smart.
Selection
The selection committee shall consider academic performance, leadership, and career goals in making their selection. The committee shall determine the relative weight given to each criterion. There are no restrictions to applicants based on sex, race, nationality, country of origin, physical disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.

Award
This is a renewable scholarship valued at $8000 ($2000 per year). Funds will be disbursed prior to the beginning of the fall and spring semesters each year, for up to four years as long as requirements are fulfilled. $1000 will be disbursed each semester (fall/spring only).

William M. Voigt Endowed Scholarship

The William M. The Scholarship will be used to assist deserving students who are enrolled at UAB.

Requirements
The following guidelines will be used in administering and making awards from the William M. Voigt UAB National Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship.

Applicants must:
  • Be currently enrolled in, or admitted to, a degree-granting program at UAB. First preference will be given to entering first-year undergraduate students,
  • Demonstrate solid academic promise and have earned at least an overall 3.0 grade point average in coursework completed prior to the time of application,
  • Applications for consideration must be submitted by the announced deadline. William M. Voigt Endowed Scholarship applications can be completed through B Smart.
