Instruments, Equipment and Devices is a digitization project to make available the surgical, optical, dental, and pharmaceutical equipment catalogs dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that are housed at the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library.

The Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences initially undertook this project to aid our own ability to identify items in our collections. Furthermore, these catalogues will be useful to those conducting research in the museum and beyond, as they provide valuable contextual information about the late 19th and early 20th century medical equipment that is housed in our repository. This contextual information includes prices, descriptions of the intended uses of the items, and information about their manufacture.

2016 summer intern, Lia Walberg, a student in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, proactively initiated and successfully managed the scanning project. She is pursuing a Master of Science in Information Science degree with a concentration in Archives and Records Management, and a certificate in Digital Curation. We are grateful for her work in UAB Historical Collections.
