Psychologist Receives $8.5 Million in Grants for Substance Abuse Studies

UAB Psychology Professor Jesse B. Milby, Ph.D., A.B.P.P., has received two grants totaling $8.5 million from the National Institute of Drug Abuse for two studies involving experimental, intensive day-treatment and training for homeless abusers of drugs and alcohol.


UAB Receives $4.3 Million for Anthrax Vaccine Study

UAB has received a five-year $4.3 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct a study of the FDA-approved anthrax vaccine. The study will determine if the vaccine is equally safe and effective in producing desired antibodies when given in fewer doses over a shorter period of time.



Gender Differences in Risk of HIV Transmission

In heterosexual couples where one partner is HIV-positive, viral load, or the amount of detectable virus in the blood, is a much stronger predictor of the risk of transmission in women than in men, according to a study by researchers at UAB. Details of the study were published in a recent issue of the journal AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses.


First Non-Invasive Method of Detecting Ovarian Cancer

Researchers at UAB have developed a highly sensitive non-invasive method of detecting and monitoring ovarian cancer, according to a study published in the September issue of the journal Gynecologic Oncology.


UAB Receives Funding for Diabetes Research

UAB has received two major grants from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation totaling more than $550,000. David Curiel, M.D., director of the UAB Gene Therapy Center, is receiving nearly $200,000 over two years and Clyde R. Guidry, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of ophthalmology at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital is the recipient of two three-year grants totaling more than $300,000.


Operating with Guidelines Can Reduce Hospital Time

Strict daily guidelines of care for those who undergo lung surgery can significantly reduce a patient’s length of stay in the hospital and actually increase quality of care and patient satisfaction. Results of a study done by a UAB chest surgeon were reported in the August issue of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.


Studying Link Between Heart Disease and Depression

The risk factors for heart disease are well known — smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol — but UAB researchers are looking at clinical depression as another potential risk factor for heart disease.
