Why is it that there is never enough time when you need it the most? I have known for about 6 months that I would be leaving this weekend to head back to Antarctica, but it seems like I left almost everything that I should have done in that 6 months until this week. I am going to work as hard as possible until it is time to go and hope that I remember to bring everything!

In this last month, I have had the excitement of finishing up my Masters degree…as well as deciding on which of many resulting scientific questions best suits my doctoral research yet to come. There is nothing quite like dove tailing two degrees! As part of this process I sat down with three of my graduate committee mentors and we discussed my accomplishments, objectives for the coming field season at Palmer Station, and how best to fit my own doctoral research into the broader activities and objectives of the research program. The good news is that we came up with a really promising plan of action.

This past Tuesday, in the seminar room of the Department of Biology I defended my Masters Thesis and it went off without a hitch. With my departure looming, I must be sure and get my Masters Thesis over to the graduate school for final approval. Luckily, I have some great roommates who say that they will be able to help me out. Without them, I am sure things would not run nearly as smooth as I work through the logistics of my departure for Antarctica!

Needless to say, I am going to be busy as a bee once I get down to Palmer Station, indeed, just as busy as I am right now getting ready to head south! The journey is about to begin…again!

"Without them, I am sure things would not run nearly as smooth as I work through the logistics of my departure for Antarctica!"

A sentence no one ever imagines they will say, if ever there was one.

Congrats on the masters. Defining the defense as "without a hitch" encourages me about my own plight.

Best of luck, and say hi to the penguins!

Thank you, and those statements were completely true. I have a gerat group of people that I work with and if you have that, then you will most likely have just as easy of a time in whatever you are trying to accomplish. Also, a couple of the pengiuns wanted me to thank you for thinking about them. They also say hello! -Kevin

Kevin,
Congratulations on your accomplishments. I'm happy to see that you have your path ahead so well identified. That alone is something that does not always happen as we go through life.

It was great chatting with you at Christmas time.
God Bless and keep you safe.

Ruth Ann

Ruth Ann- Thank you for taking the time to write. It was great talking with you over Christmas as well and this Christmas, I will have even more stories to tell. Thank you for the blessings as well, can never have enough of those -- Kevin

I am wondering if you are getting any class credit for this trip? If you do, where do I sign up?

From Kevin Peters, Posted On 2/20/2004 5:18:45 PM

Joey - Sorry, but there is no way to sign up for a trip like this. I was lucky enough to graduate at the right time and have some professors know that I was interested in more biology. However, there is a trip to Antarctica that UAB is initiating and you should inquire more about it. It would be a cruise where you get to see all the nice features and don't have to do any work! Thanks for checking in! - Kevin
