“Sacred Steps on the Camino”

UAB Visual Arts Gallery presents “Sacred Steps on the Camino” exhibition Presented in association with the UAB Department of Foreign Languages and the Embassy of Spain. This international traveling exhibit celebrates the experience of modern-day pilgrims who set out each year to retrace the ancient pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. According to legend, the bones of St. James were discovered there in the ninth century. The Gallery will have extended hours until 7 p.m. Thursday, August 20, at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, 900 13th St. S. Call the Gallery at 205-934-0815.

LECTURE and RECEPTION

Lecture and reception, “Sacred Steps on the Camino” at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, in conjunction with an international traveling exhibit that celebrates the experience of modern-day pilgrims who set out each year to retrace the ancient pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. According to legend, the bones of St. James were discovered there in the ninth century. UAB Visiting Jemison Lecturer and exhibit curator George D. Greenia, Ph.D., professor of modern languages at the College of William and Mary, will speak 5:30-6:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. S. Immediately after, the UAB Visual Arts Gallery will host a Spanish food and wine reception. Free and open to the public. Hispanic Family Day at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery

In conjunction with the “Sacred Steps on the Camino” exhibition, UAB Visiting Jemison Lecturer and exhibit curator George D. Greenia, Ph.D., professor of modern languages at the College of William and Mary, will lecture in Spanish at 12:30 p.m. at the UAB Hispanic Family Day celebration, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, on the patio in front of at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, 900 13th St. S. The events and the exhibition are free and open to the public. Children are welcome. The celebration and exhibition are co-sponsored by the UAB Department of Foreign Languages and the UAB Visual Arts Gallery. Call the Gallery at 205-934-0815 for more details.

Works by Jane Hammond

UAB Visual Arts Gallery presents works by Jane Hammond, UAB 2009 Pauline Ireland Visiting Artist Jane Hammond, renowned photographer and multimedia artist, will be the 2010 Pauline Ireland Visiting Artist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Hammond’s works are held by major museums, including The Museum of Modern Art, The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday. The gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays. Admission to the gallery is free. Call 205-934-0815.

Juried Student Annual Exhibition

The UAB Juried Student Annual features the best works of art created by students in the UAB Department of Art and Art History. The exhibition itself features works across all media made by students enrolled in a studio art class in the preceding year. Admission to the gallery is free. Call 205-934-0815. This year’s juror is Chido Johnson. Born in Nyadiri, Zimbabwe, Johnson is the chairman of sculpture at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Using media as diverse as video, cast resin, plastic buckets and carved stone, Johnson’s work explores issues of cultural identity and displacement. Johnson will give a lecture about his own studio practice at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5 in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. S. The lecture is free and open to the public.
