In September 1903 W.E.B DuBois made a
bold statement. He pronounced that "the negro race, like all races,
is going to be saved by its exceptional men. These exceptional men
and women would later be defined as the Talented Tenth. The
Talented Tenth concept was coined by DuBois during the Harlem
Renaissance to describe the phenomenon of one in ten black people
becoming influential in the world, through methods such as
continuing their education, writing books, or becoming directly
involved in social change. This conception emphasized the necessity
for higher education to develop the leadership capacity to uplift
the black community. Today we remain "In Search of the Talented
Tenth!" The goal of our conference is to cultivate knowledge,
networking, and leadership development. We do this to honor our
ancestors struggles, and for the betterment of our communities, our
youth and ourselves! Join us at our 5th Annual Member and Alumni
Conference as we explore the past and pave a way into the
future.
It is today that we fit ourselves
for the usefulness of tomorrow" W.E.B DuBois
