| Welcome to the Department of Biology |
|
Our department is at the heart of biological sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, including award-winning programs in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and service to our community. We have collaborative ties to all major branches of UAB and prepare our students for careers in the dynamic fields of healthcare and biological research. Our undergraduate curriculum provides a strong foundation in biology, preparing students for careers in medicine, dentistry, optometry, nursing, veterinary sciences, law, biodiversity conservation, ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, as well as graduate studies in all fields of biology. A high percentage of our undergraduates are admitted to graduate and professional programs in top-ranked schools nationwide. Our faculty members conduct cutting-edge research in areas such as molecular genetics, developmental biology, organismal physiology, microbiology, ecology, evolution, and polar biology. Research grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and other federal and state agencies support our research programs. The addition of four new faculty members in 2012 is strengthening our vibrant program and creating new opportunities for students. Our mentoring programs provide opportunities for hands-on learning, including field-based courses in the Bahamas, the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica, and Antarctica. One of our new initiatives, the Biology Scholars Program, gives undergraduates the opportunity to develop a research mentorship from their first year at UAB. I invite you to explore our web pages (www.uab.edu/biology) and to visit our campus to see what our department can offer you! Sincerely, Robert W. Thacker
