CPE day2015The UAB Collat School of Business is offering two day-long seminars on July 30th and Septemer 18th designed to help working professionals stay current on accounting and auditing changes and earn up to 16 hours of Accounting and Auditing CPE credit.

Steve Grice, PhD, CPA, the Botts Professor of Accounting and Director of the Master of Accountancy Program at Troy University, will provide the keynote address on July 30th. Dr. Grice previously served as a professor of accounting at UAB and was director of its Master of Accounting program. He has authored more than 40 journal articles and provided technical consultation to various CPA firms. He currently serves as the Scholar-in-Residence for Carr, Riggs, & Ingram, LLC.

Quinton Booker, PhD, CPA, professor and chairman of the Department of Accounting at Jackson State University, will provide the keynote address on Septmenber 18th. Dr. Booker currently serves as a member of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy’s Center for the Public Trust. He served as a member of the Mississippi State Board of Public Accountancy from 1992 to 2002, and recently completed a three-year term on the AICPA Board of Directors.

Both Seminars will be held at The Club, 1 Robert Smith Drive, Birmingham, AL.  Course fees cover the sessions, materials, continental breakfast, lunch and refreshments.

8:15-10:15 - Dr. Steve Grice, PhD, CPA, Botts Professor of Accounting, Troy University

Accounting and Auditing Update: This session provides a review of recent changes to the technical accounting and auditing guidance. The topics include recent accounting standards issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board as well as recent auditing standards issued by the Auditing Standards Board. Participants should gain a broad understanding of how the new guidance will impact their organization.

10:30-12:15 Dr. James Worrell, PhD, CPA, CISA, CIA, Associate Professor of Accounting, University of Alabama at Birmingham
Auditing IT Governance: In this session, attendees will be introduced to the concept of IT governance and internal controls associated with IT governance, how it fits into the larger enterprise governance landscape and the IT Governance Institute’s (ITGI) COBIT 5 framework for effective governance of enterprise information technology. Attendees will be provided with an audit program for auditing IT governance, to include risks, control objectives and suggested audit procedures.

Auditing Company (and IT) Projects: In this session, attendees with be introduced to the concept of and internal controls associated with project management. Attendees will be provided with an audit program for auditing company (and IT) projects, to include risks, control objectives and suggested audit procedures.

Sarbanes Oxley — Where are we now?: This session will address the following topics:
• Has SOX provided the results that were intended when it was implemented?
• What is the cost associated with being SOX compliant in today’s environment?
• What are some of the current issues concerning SOX?
• What are some of the current issues/concerns of the PCAOB?
• What effect has SOX had on corporate governance?

Risk Management: This session will include an overview of a risk management methodology that can be used to better plan and perform audits or as a tool to help clients navigate through significant events.

3:15-4:15 Jenice Prather-Kinsey, PhD, CPA, Professor of Accounting and Sallie W. Dean Scholar, University of Alabama at Birmingham
Convergence with Globally Accepted Accounting Standards- Where are we now?: This session will discuss why convergence between the FASB, the IASB, and the SEC is idle and possibly diverging. It will discuss the barriers to accounting convergence, how the political and legal interplay of democracies differ between countries, and how local jurisdictions’ political and legal structures effect the development of accounting standards.
