In the 20 years working at UAB, Dr. Messina has been pivotal to the success of the accounting department. He served as the accounting department Chair and as Professor in the Graduate School of Management; he has also served on numerous committees, frequently accepting leadership positions on many of these committees. His strong ties with the Birmingham business community allowed him to administer accounting and information systems advisory boards with an involvement of over 40 CFOs and CIOs that led to an increase of program funding and more than doubled scholarship opportunities for Accounting and Information Systems students. Dr. Messina is a key figure in the creation of Collat’s Information Systems (I.S.) program. He took the initiative to help develop this I.S. program in compliance to rapidly evolving technology demands in Alabama. For his dedication to teaching, Dr. Messina has been honored with numerous teaching awards, including the Ellen Gregg Ingalls UAB National Alumni Society Achievement in Teaching Award and UAB Presidents Award for Excellence in Teaching. In addition to his work at the Collat School of Business, Dr. Messina currently serves as a Faculty Athletics Representative for UAB’s NCAA program.
Outside of UAB, Dr. Messina is just as proactive in the accounting community. He served on the Birmingham Chapter of the Board of Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants where he held all leadership positions including Presidency. He is an editor for two accounting journals and is the author or co-author of over forty articles published in highly regarded academic and trade journals. Dr. Messina frequently speaks regionally, nationally, and internationally for professional meetings and has lectured twice at Universita Degli Studi, G D’Annunzio is Pescara, Italy.
