Molly Wasko 16Management Information Systems professor Molly Wasko, Ph.D., who also chairs the UAB Collat School of Business Management, Information Systems and Quantitative Methods (MISQ) Department, has been appointed associate dean of research, innovation and faculty success, effective Jan. 1, 2017.

In her new role, Wasko will provide leadership and guidance on overall research strategy for the school as well as facilitate research collaborations within the school and with faculty across campus. In addition, she will help facilitate innovation and entrepreneurship programs and help bridge entrepreneurial activities between campus and the Birmingham community. She will also assist and oversee the administration and implementation of academic policies and ensure that the school is engaged in continuous improvement processes.

"I aim for everyone to see that the UAB faculty is renowned in the field of cutting-edge research," said Wasko. "We have top scholars teaching in our classrooms. I don’t want it to be a secret anymore."

Prior to her appointment, Wasko served as faculty advisor to the UAB Makerspace and UAB Innovation Fellows Program. The Makerspace and UIF programs provide opportunities for students to explore innovation and entrepreneurship in a hands-on environment. Wasko also served as chair of the MISQ department and a professor teaching primarily strategic information technologies, innovation and entrepreneurship and project management.

Most recently, she has overseen the implementation of the National Science Foundation’s Innovation Corps (I-Corps) program at UAB. The I-Corps program enables participants “to identify valuable product opportunities that can emerge from academic research, and offers entrepreneurship training to participants by combining experience and guidance from established entrepreneurs,” according to the National Science Foundation. Wasko will serve as Collat’s liaison to the institute.

Wasko assumes accreditation duties from Lary Cowart, Ph.D., who served as assistant dean of accreditation in 2015. Dr. Cowart will return to the classroom as a full-time professor. Management Professor Jack Howard, Ph.D., will replace Wasko as interim chair of the MISQ department.
