Stephanie Yates, Ph.D., was honored this week as one of three 2017 A.G. Gaston Community Service Award recipients. Dr. Yates, director of the UAB Collat School of Business’s Regions Institute for Financial Education, was honored at the 13th Annual A.G. Gaston Conference luncheon Wednesday at the BJCC.
“In choosing the recipients, several things are considered, including leadership, character, exceptional courage and devotion,” said Bob Dickerson, conference host and executive director of the Birmingham Business Resource Center. “This award is given annually to individuals who embody the characteristics of A.G. Gaston. It is a prestigious award that serves to recognize the best of the best within our community.”
This year’s conference themes was “Closing the Wealth Gap Through Entrepreneurship and Policy,” focusing on economic strength and civic enrichment.
Through the Regions Institute for Financial Education, Dr. Yates leads UAB’s effort to provide programs and services aimed toward increasing financial literacy throughout the state and beyond.
“Dr. Yates has devoted most of her career to addressing financial issues that affect women, minorities, the elderly and the impoverished,” said Arline Savage, Ph.D., chair of Collat’s Department of Accounting and Finance.
Along with a dedicated staff, Dr. Yates provides programs and workshops on a variety of financial topics for middle school, high school and college students as well as working adults and retirees throughout the state. She also serves as an associate professor of finance at UAB.
