On November 30, 2011, Professor Ollie Powers retired from the UAB School of Business after 36 years.

During his 36 year career he witnessed the University’s development from its infancy; the School of Business went from being an unaccredited business program to an AACSB accredited School of Business.  Throughout it all, Ollie enjoyed his time at UAB too much to call it work, although his dedication to the institution and its students would suggest otherwise.

Because of Ollie and others like him the School’s administration has been successful over the years in assembling a number of strong, student-oriented faculty members who have been the foundation of the Accounting Program.  These faculty were made up of excellent teachers whose interest in and contributions to students extended well beyond the classroom.  The passage of time results in retirements of long standing faculty, illustrating the commitment of the accounting faculty to the students, program, and UAB. The program is now in transition, combining the strengths of our long serving faculty with our new faculty who will continue in the tradition of the program focused on students, alumni, and employers.

The School has been working hard to recruit new tenure-track faculty members and thus far has hired five:  Drs. Dawn Drnevich, Mary Im, Joshua Racca, Terry Grant, and Arline Savage who joined us from Texas Tech University, the University of Georgia, the University of North Texas, Florida State and the University of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, respectively.  The School’s faculty recruitment efforts will continue, including hiring someone to replace Ollie.  In order to recruit a well-respected faculty member who focuses on teaching and student service, and to recognize Ollie’s years of service to UAB, the School has decided to establish an endowed faculty position in his name.  UAB School of Business is pleased and honored to establish the Ollie S. Powers Endowed Faculty Position in Accounting.

The UAB accounting faculty has always been proud and boasted of the support of alumni and friends of the Department.  For the betterment of the Department and for the benefit of current and future students, please consider giving to the Ollie S.
