6th UAB recipient in last 3 years

Jacob Ledbetter, a freshman in the UAB School of Business, has been selected for the prestigious Critical Language Scholarship Program. It is the sixth such honor for a UAB student in the last three years.

The CLS selects approximately 60 students from across the country and fully funds them to study a critical language for 7-10 weeks in another country. Ledbetter, an economics major, will study beginning Korean in South Korea this summer.

“I hope to be able to use the language skills I acquire this summer in my professional life as I pursue a career in the energy sector and renewable energy in particular,” said Ledbetter. “As many of these energy companies expand internationally, leaders in the industry will need to be familiar with other languages and cultures.”

Ledbetter will study the language and the culture at Chonbuk University in Jeonju. The CLS Program is part of an effort by the U.S. government to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages.
