Choosing to attend UAB has proven to be one of the best decisions I have made. I received a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) in 2007 and decided to pursue a graduate degree in accounting as well as a career as a CPA. In order to meet the prerequisite requirements for the Master of Accountancy (MAc) program at UAB and to qualify for the CPA exam, I needed to complete several undergraduate accounting courses. I applied to UAB in the spring of 2008, received acceptance and began my first prerequisite class in June of that year.
By the fall, I realized a career in public accounting was the best path for me. I was informed that UAB had a great internship program, thus I contacted Dr. Debbie Tanju and began the internship process. I interviewed with several accounting firms and was offered internship positions with great firms. I accepted an internship with Birmingham-based Barfield, Murphy, Shank, and Smith (BMSS).
While going through the internship interview process, I applied to the MAc program at UAB. In December, I was notified that I had been accepted into the program. I began the MAc program curriculum in January 2009, as well as, my 10 week internship with BMSS. I continued to intern at BMSS until the end of May when I was scheduled to leave for China for a one month study abroad program with UAB’s School of Business. When the China trip was canceled due to the swine flu epidemic, I felt I needed to use my unanticipated free time wisely. I decided to begin my six month studies for the four sections of the CPA exam. This would prove to be a great decision. I was able to correlate my graduate classes with my CPA review, thus doubling my preparation for the CPA exam.
I am currently in the second semester of the MAc program and plan to complete the program in May 2010. As of October 2009, I have passed two sections of the CPA exam, await the 3rd score, and will take the final section in November. Also, at the conclusion of my internship with BMSS in May I was offered a full-time accounting position. I will begin as a staff accountant in September 2010.
All of my accomplishments would not have been possible without the amazing faculty and staff of the UAB School of Business. I am ever so grateful for their encouragement, support, and dedication to their students.
