Don Logan, former chairman of Time Warner Cable and former Chairman of Time Warner Inc.’s Media Communications Group, returned to the School of Business on September 20, 2011 to speak with students in the combined undergraduate capstone and MBA course, “Strategic Management: Conversations with CEOs.”

Mr. Logan described the change that has occurred in the cable industry since its inception 40 years ago when cable operators had monopolies over a relatively small amount of video programming over cables, to the environment today when companies like Time Warner Cable have many competitors not only for video services but also for data services and telephony services, delivered over wires and wirelessly.

Students asked Mr. Logan for his views on a variety of strategic issues facing companies like Time Warner Cable including what effect the recently-announced split of Netflix might have.

Students were also interested in Mr. Logan’s role as an owner of the Birmingham Barons and its proposal to build a new baseball stadium adjacent to the UAB campus. Mr. Logan expressed optimism about the arrangements for the stadium being finalized and said that addition of the stadium would bring “lots of growth and energy” to the campus environment.

Logan is an Alabama native who spent the first half of his career in Birmingham at Southern Progress Corporation, which was acquired by Time, Inc. in 1985. He moved to New York City with Time, Inc. in 1994 but returned upon his retirement in 2005. He and other investors recently purchased the media company BASS, sponsor of the Bassmasters Classic, and is locating its headquarters in Birmingham. Mr. Logan remains a director of Time Warner Cable.

“Strategic Management: Conversations with CEOs” is taught by Professors Eddie Friend and Stephen Yoder, and features visits from CEOs of public or other large complex organizations who discuss their organizations’ strategies and how they are developed and implemented.
