UAB Names New Chair of Accounting and Finance

 

Arline Savage 200Arline Savage, Ph.D., has been named chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Collat School of Business.  Savage joined the accounting faculty at UAB in Fall 2012 from the Orfalea College of Business at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where she was the Deloitte Faculty Fellow and recipient of the Fluor Corporation Excellence in Teaching Award, the Ernst & Young Outstanding Educator Award, and the Ernst & Young Leader in Ethics Award.

A world-renowned accounting scholar, Savage has taught at universities in South Africa, Canada and the United States.  Dr. Savage earned her Ph.D. from the University of Port Elizabeth (now named the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) in South Africa.

“We are extremely pleased to have someone of Dr. Savage’s caliber not only teaching our next generation of accountants at Collat, but now also leading the department,” said Collat School of Business Dean Eric Jack. Ph.D.  “Accounting is the largest program in our school and the third largest undergraduate program at UAB.  We have a strong tradition of producing exceptional accounting and finance students, and I expect we’ll continue to lead the way under Dr. Savage’s leadership.”

Savage’s research interests include accounting education.  In a forthcoming publication that ranks individual accounting researchers based on their production of accounting education research, she is ranked 17th in the world over a six-year period.

“My most important task as chair is to fulfil the trust placed in me by the dean and my colleagues,” said Savage.  “In this regard, I will seek the advice and support of my colleagues and our business partners, as we continue to work together as a team to grow our online and traditional accounting and finance programs.  Simultaneously, we will continually strive to improve learning outcomes and opportunities for our students.”

Savage also serves as director of Collat’s Master of Accounting program.  Dr. Savage is past president of the Accounting Information Systems (AIS) Educator Association, which provides hands-on computer training and mentorship for accounting faculty across the United States, and is founding editor-in-chief of the association’s AIS Educator Journal.  She also serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Business Information Systems, Issues in Accounting Education, and the Journal of Accounting Education.

Savage has more than 40 academic and professional publications to her credit, as well as six best paper awards.  Outside of academia, she has worked in industry as an accounting professional and as a consultant to private equity investors on various accounting and finance projects in the food wholesale, apparel, engineering, and manufacturing industries.

Dr. Savage will begin her duties as department chair in August 2014.

“It is an honor and a privilege to serve my colleagues and our students by managing the daily scholarship and teaching activities in our department,” she said.
