Provost Names Finalists for School of Business Dean

The four finalists for dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Business will visit campus during the next two weeks for interviews and public presentations.

The candidates are Kenneth R. Evans of the University of Oklahoma , Eric P. Jack of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Stephen T. Parente of the University of Minnesota, and David J. Urban of Virginia Commonwealth University.

Kenneth R. Evans holds the Fred E. Brown Chair in Business and is currently dean of the Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma. Evans received his bachelor’s degree in English and political science from the University of California, Davis. He earned an M.B.A. with an emphasis on marketing and quantitative methods from California State University, Sacramento and a doctorate in marketing from the University of Colorado.

Before coming to the University of Oklahoma in 2007, Evans served as associate dean of graduate studies at the University of Missouri, where he was also the Pinkney C. Walker Professor of Marketing. He also served as a marketing professor, marketing department chair, associate dean of undergraduate studies and acting dean at the university. Evans’ research interests include interpersonal influence, sales management, services marketing, and marketing management and theory.

Eric P. Jack is the interim dean of UAB’s School of Business. He received his bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. He earned an M.B.A. with an emphasis on research and development management from Wright State University and a doctorate in operations management from the University of Cincinnati.

Before being named interim dean in 2011, Jack served as associate dean of the school for four years. He also served as interim chair of the management, information systems and quantitative methods department and a management professor at the university. Before beginning his academic career, Jack served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force in various capacities, including construction planner and executive officer at Air Force Logistics Command Headquarters and assistant professor of professional continuing education at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Jack’s research interests include operations strategy, flexibility, health care management, service operations, quality management, and supply chain management.

Stephen T. Parente is Minnesota Insurance Industry Chair of Health Finance at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and director of the university’s Medical Industry Leadership Institute. He received a bachelor’s degree in health & society and master’s degree in public policy analysis from the University of Rochester. He earned a master of public health from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and a doctorate in health care finance and organization from Johns Hopkins University.

Before coming to the University of Minnesota in 2006, Parente served as a senior research director for the National Organization of Research at the University of Chicago’s Office for Health Policy Studies and as adjunct faculty for Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Health Policy and Management, a position he still holds. He also is principal of Health Systems Innovation Network LLC.

David J. Urban is executive associate dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business. Urban received a bachelor’s degree in commerce with a marketing concentration from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan. He earned a doctorate in business administration with a marketing concentration from the University of Michigan.

At Virginia Commonwealth University, Urban has served as acting dean, chair of the marketing department and a marketing professor at the School of Business and as director of the Survey Evaluation and Research Laboratory and director of the Commonwealth Poll at the university’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. Before coming to Virginia Commonwealth University in 1989, Urban served as assistant professor of marketing at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business Administration.
