UAB SHRM Chapter Hosts Success with LinkedIn Workshops

SHRM linkedin1The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), UAB Collat School of Business (CSOB) student chapter sponsored two LinkedIn workshops on November 14, 2013 that were facilitated by expert LinkedIn trainer, David McElhaney.  Mr. McElhaney is the Managing Partner at Global Recruiters of Huntsville. Over 70 students, faculty, and staff members participated in the training event. The 90 minute sessions covered the value of networking along with the mechanics of managing your LinkedIn profile. Mr. McElhaney provided numerous tips to increase your chance of getting noticed and, of course, getting connected. CSOB student, Christy Tai, said that she was surprised to learn that “applying online for a job is only successful 3 to 5 percent of the time.”  According to Mr. McElhaney, “It is not just who you know” but SHRM linkedin2also “who knows you.”  The student president of the American Marketing Association, UAB chapter, appreciated the workshop, and added “I thought I knew what I was doing on LinkedIn, but I learned numerous things that I can improve upon to increase my networking opportunities.”

Specifically, Mr. McElhaney suggested:
  • Adding a summary to your profile, it serves as your extended “elevator pitch”.
  • Making sure you have contact information included in your profile so that interested parties can contact you quickly.
  • When making connections be sure and write an email customized to the person instead of using the default message provided by LinkedIn.
  • Join several groups of interest and be sure and introduce yourself to the leader of the group.

The SHRM CSOB student chapter is a student-led organization that promotes the field of human resources by working closely with CSOB Careers Services, the Birmingham SHRM chapter and by providing networking opportunities for UAB students. The chapter invites expert speakers to cover relevant HR topics, delivers timely workshops that meet the needs of the UAB community, and services both the CSOB and greater Birmingham community by volunteering their time and expertise.

The SHRM CSOB chapter was awarded the Superior Merit award for its excellence and achievement during the 2012-13 academic year.
