The Green and Gold Fund, UAB’s student-managed investment portfolio, has earned an outstanding reputation in the investment management community—both regionally and nationally. The Fund’s remarkable success is set to be profiled in an upcoming issue of UAB Magazine, and previously has been featured on the highest-rated national financial news channel in America, CNBC. The CNBC feature included an interview of the Fund’s Chief Investment Officer by well-known anchor Erin Burnett, in which the two discussed some of the Fund’s successful stock selections. The interview appeared on the popular CNBC show Squawk Box, which is viewed by millions of professional investors each day.
The Fund provides students with direct experience in portfolio management and the financial markets, which benefits their pursuit of career opportunities. All positions in the Fund—including Chief Investment Officer, Chief Economist, Chief Accounting Officer, Marketing Director, portfolio managers and analysts—are held by UAB undergraduate and MBA students and all decisions involve real money. At weekly meetings, members vote to buy and sell stocks, bonds, exchange-traded funds and other securities as they manage a portfolio valued at approximately $425,000 (as of January 2010). Students who are selected for membership in the Fund may be eligible to receive generous benefits including scholarships and sponsored travel to national collegiate competitions.
The Green and Gold Fund also has been highlighted in Business Week magazine for its victory in a previous meeting of the RISE (Redefining Investment Strategy Education) forum and national collegiate competition. In a direct competition with 50 other prestigious U.S. business schools at this meeting, UAB claimed first place in the undergraduate growth-style portfolio category. The Fund’s current members are working toward achieving similar success at this year’s meeting in March.
