Alumni Spotlight- Rusty McHan

McHan_RustyAs an associate at an international investment company, Rusty McHan has finally found his place in the investment banking world. While interning with Regions Bank during his senior year at UAB’s School of Business, Rusty was offered and accepted a full-time position as a Commercial Credit Analyst. Although he enjoyed his work, he wanted more. After graduating he left Regions and moved to Chicago in order to pursue a career in investment banking.”

After extensive research of companies and numerous interviews, Rusty took a position at Giuliani Capital Advisors. There he was able to work on mergers and acquisitions of companies-a love that traced back to UAB. Today, Rusty still works with mergers and acquisitions with Macquarie Group, who purchased Giuliani Capital, and lives in New York City. He is also pursuing his Masters of Finance through INSEAD.

Rusty credits UAB for helping to develop his love for investment banking. From his first finance class to his honors classes, Rusty learned from every experience and opportunity offered to him. He credits the faculty at UAB as being an integral part in his success. “The emphasis on relationships within the school of business not only prepares you but gives you a head start when entering your career.” Rusty also believes that the academic experiences offered were like no others. He said that he has yet to see another Finance major who was able to meet CEO’s of companies like that in UAB’s Strategic Management course. The interactions with not only faculty, but with business leaders in the Birmingham community helped to enhance his learning experience. They also helped his communication and personal skills which also gave him an edge.

When asked how he would summarize his experience at UAB, Rusty replied, “Invaluable”.

And his advice to current and future students? “Stay involved and engaged in classes but also the extracurricular activities in the School of Business. The combination of the two will give you what you need to present yourself of value.”
