New Leadership Fund Encourages Annual Philanthropy

Westerhold125Leadership giving has a fresh direction at the School of Business.  Successfully preparing students to effectively contribute to business requires internships, experiential learning opportunities, and scholarships. That’s why Abby Westerhold, the school’s new associate director of Leadership Giving, is tasked with growing the newly created Business Leadership Fund.

The School of Business Leadership Fund aims to create a culture of philanthropy among the School’s alumni and friends. “We have outstanding alumni, and we want to involve them in shaping the growth of our school,” Westerhold says. “My hope is that the Leadership Fund will give our alumni and friends a deeper connection to the happenings of the school, our faculty, and our students.”

The School of Business Leadership Fund welcomes gifts of all sizes. In particular, the fund encourages an increase in annual investments in the $1,000 to $5,000 range. All gifts to the fund will be used at the school’s discretion to support student needs such as travel and housing costs associated with the internships that give UAB Business students the edge they need in the job market.  Gifts to the Leadership Fund will also pay for innovative school projects and programs that improve the education and employment prospects of our students.

In addition to the Leadership Fund, Westerhold will oversee alumni relations. “Our current students are eager for more opportunities to build connections with alumni,” she notes. Her keen sense of student needs stems from her previous work as a recruitment coordinator for the School of Business. In that role, explains Erik Kahill, senior director of external affairs for the school, Westerhold gained extensive experience in communicating all that UAB has to offer—a sensibility that is sure to more effectively connect students, alumni, and donors.
