2011: A Look Ahead for the School and our Alumni Chapters

This year will be a memorable year for the School of Business. In 2011, the School will celebrate its 40th anniversary! Since our inception in 1971, we have seen great growth and change. We have a record number of graduate students enrolled since our MBA program began in ’71 and the Master of Accounting program which began in ’81, and we continue to see increases in total student enrollment. We moved from Building No. 1, currently the School of Education building, to the Business and Engineering Complex in 1983. And we have grown our scholarship allocation from one $500 scholarship donated by McGriff Seibels to over $500,000.

Dr. David R. Klock, our fifth dean will have been here for three years this spring and we have two new department chairs in addition to fourteen new faculty that have joined us in the last two years. We are not only celebrating our achievements and those who have helped build the framework for where we are today, but also our bright future and the plans for excellence ahead.

Recognizing those that have come before us, it is important that we maintain and build even stronger networks with our alumni. As alumni, you are part of an elite group of business men and women that have made a great name for the UAB School of Business. We are proud of our alumni and our success is due in part to the success of those we have educated and trained.

In our plans for the next year, we aim to engage graduates through our alumni associations and alumni receptions. The School of Business has three affiliated chapters of the UAB National Alumni Society: Business, Accounting, and MBA. Currently, our MBA Alumni Association is very active with a newly elected president, Rahul Thadani, MBA ’10.  Our Accounting and Business alumni chapters are reemerging and plan to have a larger presence in 2011. Creating leadership for these two chapters has been the first step. Chad Nichols, MBA ’02, and Tyler Jenkins, Management ’96 and Accounting ’06, have committed to leading this charge as presidents of the Business and Accounting Alumni Chapters respectively. We look forward to growing our alumni leadership and alumni involvement and hope you’ll join our alumni associations by going to www.uab.edu/alumni where you can become an active member of the Business, Accounting, or MBA chapters.
