Internship Provides More than Experience for a Recent MBA Graduate

Andrew Murphy took time at the UAB School of Business graduation reception held on December 17th, 2011 to share his journey over the last few years since he started the UAB MBA program.  With a Fine Arts degree from Samford University, Andrew was working as an office manager and bookkeeper when he discovered that he really enjoyed business and finance.

He started the MBA program in 2008 and continued to work full-time.  He became a new father in 2009, and had a second child less than two years later.  In April 2011, he was laid-off from a struggling company.   After job searching for a few months, he took a couple of jobs that allowed his family to scrape by while he continued to work on his MBA and look for full-time employment.  Andrew submitted his application along with resume to Dragon Trail, an on-line career management site for UAB students and alumni.  Once listed in Dragon Trail, Whitney Wilson, UAB School of Business Internship Program Coordinator, and Finance Professor Stephanie Rauterkus assisted Andrew in securing a paid internship opportunity with Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. The internship started in October of this year and runs through the end of December.

The internship allowed Andrew to get a foot in the door and gain experience while he completed his MBA.   With an MBA degree and gratitude to all who helped him secure the internship, Andrew will start 2012 employed with Blue Cross Blue Shield Association as a Business Analyst.
