Chair, Department of Accounting and Finance

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications from, and nominations of, outstanding candidates for the position of Chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance. This is an important opportunity for a teacher-scholar to build on the prior successes of UAB, concomitant with the School’s sharpening its focus on programs and research while increasing enrollment.

Dean David Klock, who joined UAB in March of 2008, leads the School of Business. (See http://main.uab.edu/Sites/MediaRelations/articles/37729/ to read about Dean Klock’s background.)  Since arriving at UAB Dean Klock has worked closely with the faculty to develop a long-term vision for the School that includes:

(1)  Becoming a destination school for high-achieving students throughout the South;

(2)  Expanding an established business reputation as a top priority institution for student recruiting, and

(3)  Expanding an environment that stimulates exceptional teacher/scholars in business by materially enhancing support for excellence in published research.

The Location – Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham, located at the southern most edge of the Appalachian Mountains, is the largest city in Alabama. The metropolitan area is home to 1.1 million people and is a significant commercial center in the Southeast. The city’s business base has evolved from manufacturing to a service economy with strong professional, business, legal, and medical sectors. Several Fortune 500 companies are located in the region, and the area’s income growth rate is highly ranked.

Birmingham is also a leading regional cultural center and its many attractions include the Alabama Symphony, Alabama Ballet, Alabama School of Fine Arts, and the Birmingham Museum of Art.  Birmingham’s pivotal role in the civil rights movement is chronicled in the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, which promotes civil and human rights education worldwide.

A significant attraction to the area is the unparalleled quality of life in the Birmingham metropolitan area. The housing market and cost of living are among the most affordable in the Southeast. Attractive housing choices exist in the city’s historic neighborhoods as well as in the surrounding hilly and scenic communities. Area schools, both public and private, are recognized as among the nation's best.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

UAB is one of the most research intense universities in the nation, with annual funded grant research expenditures that exceed $430 million.  Collaboration based on inter-disciplinary, inter-school, and entrepreneurial problem solving are hallmarks of UAB’s culture. The culture of collaboration has played an important role in the University’s growth and remarkable ascent as a research institution.

The University and its health system have an annual operating budget of approximately $2 billion. UAB includes 13 schools that cover a broad range of social sciences, humanities, engineering, business, science and medicine. UAB’s medical and health-oriented schools are national leaders and their faculties collaborate on research with faculty in the School of Business. The University and its health system occupy over 85 city blocks with many new buildings under construction and others planned for the immediate future. The campus is a unique blend of “walkable” urban and expanding green areas with a more traditional residential campus environment.

There are 2,212 faculty and 17,591 students enrolled at the University.   The student body includes 11,284 undergraduates of whom 30% are people of color and 60% are female.

The School of Business

The UAB School of Business is accredited by AACSB International with separate accounting accreditation. With an annual operating budget of $12,500,000, the School of Business enjoys a strong financial position and is currently recruiting new faculty in several departments.

The School’s 55 full-time faculty members reside in three academic departments:

(1) Accounting and Finance;

(2) Management, Information Systems, Quantitative Methods; and

(3) Marketing, Economics, and Industrial Distribution.

The faculty is diverse with women and people of color represented in all academic departments.

There are 1,900 students enrolled in the School of Business – they come from across the nation and numerous foreign countries. The 350 graduate students study in a variety of programs, including an MBA program, a Master of Accounting program, a combined MBA and Master of Public Health program, and a combined MBA and Master of Science in Health Administration.   The School of Health Professions and the School of Business offer a joint Ph.D. program in health care administration.

The Department of Accounting and Finance

The Department includes 20 faculty members.  The Accounting program is accredited by AACSB International (through 2011/2012) and is well known for its excellent teaching and student performance – graduates have a high pass rate on the CPA exam and in eight out of the last eleven years a UAB student has achieved the highest mark on the CPA exam in Alabama.  The program also offers a Master of Accounting option for graduate students.

The Finance program offers three tracks to undergraduates: Financial Management which is designed for students who will pursue financial decision making positions in large corporations; Investments and Institutions which is geared to students who wish to pursue careers in financial institutions, such as banks, savings and loans, and credit unions, or careers in the securities industry; and a Real Estate track which is currently in development.  Finance students also run the Green and Gold Fund that is invested in public markets.

Opportunities for the New Chair

The Department will benefit from a Chair who provides strong strategic and operational leadership needed for continuous improvement in building innovative high-demand student learning programs and high-quality faculty research/publications. An optimal new leader will also bring an understanding of the skills needed to facilitate growth in sponsored research for the academic community.

The recent move to combine the Accounting and Finance groups provides an important opportunity for innovative curriculum integrating accounting and finance in a practical way to enhance student skill building.  This holds much promise in broadening the education base and perspective for accounting students with courses in corporate finance and capital markets and the same is true in the opposite direction – offering finance students a rich understanding of how financial decisions impact financial reports.

The new Chair will foster cross-disciplinary activities with other teacher-scholars in the School as well as the exceptional research faculty in engineering and healthcare management. The Dean is also prepared to invest in program/research growth.

Outreach to the business community, with strong support from the Dean and the School development staff, is a key ancillary activity for the Chair.  The new Chair will work with the Dean and other leaders in the School to expand alliances with the business community and with prospective and existing donors. These relationships are important to build on the Accounting and Finance group’s history of acquiring private funding – to support student scholarships, faculty research, and Department operations.

  • Regional and national recognition for excellence in the disciplinary programs noted above;
  • Enhanced reputation measured by: increased student enrollment, job placement for graduates, ability to attract the best faculty in the Department’s disciplines, and increased publications in leading scholarly and professional  journals;
  • Reaccreditation of the accounting program; and
  • Enhanced external relations and increased philanthropy.
  •

    Qualifications

    The important challenges described above require a proven leader with broad vision, strong team building skills, and ability to collaboratively lead the Department.

    The ideal candidate will have an earned doctorate in accounting, professional certification, and a strong record of published research and scholarship..

    He/she will be an associate or full professor at a university where teaching and research are highly valued.  Experience in an AASCB accredited school is preferred. Prior administrative experience is preferred but not required. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

    She/he will have many of the following experiences, capabilities, and attributes:

  • Experience building coalitions of faculty and senior administrators,
  • Ability to build partnerships across the academic community and with industry,
  • Ability to lead change using approaches and processes which emphasize inclusion, transparency, and respect,
  • Ability to create an environment in which faculty are motivated to contribute to the research and teaching objectives of the School of Business,
  • Strong commitment to diversity,
  • High energy level, and
  • A personality that is collegial and enjoyable to work with.
  •

    The School anticipates offering a very competitive compensation package to recruit a highly qualified candidate.
