Cohutta/Ocoee: Backpacking & rafting, TN/GA - August 29-30


IMG 7347 copyJoin us for a backpacking adventure in the  Cohutta  Wilderness. Within the  Cohutta  Mountains are peaks that rise to 4,200 ft and more than a hundred miles of hiking trails. This is the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi River.  Wild life abound!  Then whitewater raft down the Ocoee, crossing over the most continuous stretch of Class III-IV Rapids in the country; tumbling through a spectacular scenic gorge in the Cherokee National Fores

Tumbling Rock: Wild caving, AL - September 19


TumblingRocknopeople webTumbling Rock Cave is one of Alabama's best kept secrets! Spend the day on a guided hike through the cave's many passages. Head through the Great Hall of Mysteries to check out Kings Showers; at 465' it is Alabama's largest waterfall! Be sure and pack a lunch to eat when you get to the Christmas tree formation.

Suwannee River: Kayaking & camping, FL - September 18-20


Suwannee River CanoeLooking for a great way to kick off the new school year? Join us as we kayak one of Florida's most iconic rivers. After boating along the beautiful Suwannee River, camp out at Wood's Ferry- one of the five river camps- it includes screened-in platforms, hot showers and restrooms! Then kayak to the famous Spirit of Suwanee Music Park and enjoy what is quickly becoming one of Northern Florida's crowning jewels.

Trip Leader Training 15Looking for an all-expense paid trip to some great outdoor destinations? Are you a fun-loving, outgoing person who enjoys serving others? Are you a UAB student? If so, then join our team and grow your leadership skills in the outdoors. If you are interested in becoming a trip leader for Outdoor Pursuits, please inquire in the Outdoor Pursuits office. There is one training trip per semester, and lots of in the field training in between.

Great Smoky Mountains NP: Backpacking, NC - October 9-11


Great Smoky Mtn 15Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a hiker's paradise with over 800 miles of maintained trails ranging from short leg-stretchers to treks that require backcountry camping. The  Smokies offer a great getaway in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains complete with diverse plant and animal life and beautiful views of waterfalls. Transportation, equipment, skilled leaders, and park fees are included in the cost of the trip.

Fontana, Smoky Mountains: Canoeing & backpacking, NC - October 16-18


Fontana Smoky Mtns 15Canoe across beautiful Fontana Lake to the town of Proctor, a ghost town abandoned when Fontana Lake flooded the road leading to the town. Explore the foundation remains of Proctor then backpack up a  trail surrounded by vibrant fall foliage along a cascading mountain stream.

Into The WoodsSpend a day volunteering in the Sipsey Wilderness. Come help us work on trail maintenance and make hiking more safe and fun.

Palisades Park: Rock Climbing, AL - October 25 (Sat)


PalisadesParkSandrockWant to try your climbing skills somewhere other than the UAB Rockwall? This is the perfect opportunity to see what outdoor climbing is all about. Palisades is the perfect place for climbers of all skill levels to get comfortable top rope climbing. Located in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, the scenery will be nothing short of spectacular. So bring a friend down to the Outdoor Pursuits Office as you  come sign up for this adventure.

Sipsey: Backpacking, AL - October 30-November 1


Sipsey BackpackingBackpack in one of the third largest wilderness areas east of the Mississippi. Hardwood and pine trees dominate the ridges of the spectacular Sipsey Wilderness. The Sipsey Wilderness is also known for the largest Poplar tree in the state of Alabama and its many deep and beautifully green canyons. Sipsey is loaded with an incredible number of waterfalls, which has also earned it the name "land of a thousand waterfalls." These trails are mostly level and suitable for all levels of backpacking ability.

Mount Rogers: Backpacking, VA - November 20-24


MtRogersBackpack in the beautiful Mount Rogers National Recreation Area to the highest point in Virginia. Mount Rogers is located along the Appalachian Trail, making it a popular destination for hikers. We will mingle with wild ponies as we backpack through thick spruce-fir forests and across open grassybalds.These trails are suitable for all levels of backpacking ability.

Colorado: Skiing, CO - December 12-20


ColoradoSkiHead to Colorado this winterbreakand ski at Keystone and Arapahoe Basin. Covering three mountains, with 3,148 acres of skiable terrain, 131 trails of varying difficulty,and offering night skiing,Keystone is an incredible place to ski for anyone from beginners to experts!Just up the road from Keystone is Arapahoe Basin, a favorite ski destination of many locals, with runs that span over 2,270 feet vertically, taking skiers over 12,000 feetand above the treeline.Both Keystone and A-Basin offer an abundance of skiing for all levels of ability. The tripincludes 4 to 5 days of skiing, and the tripfee coverscondo lodging, a season lift passfor Keystone and A-basin,a cross country drive,and ski rentals. Participants are responsible for all meals and clothing. Signups after the pre-trip meeting may be possible with an additional fee.

WFR Recertification - December 19-21


WFR RecertThe Open Recertification course is open to graduates of ALL wilderness medical training courses of 64 hours or longer with a current Wilderness First Responder certification. Successful graduates of this course will receive Wilderness Medical Associates' Wilderness First Responder, Anaphylaxis, and BLS/Healthcare Provider-level CPR certifications. WMA WEMT graduates with a current EMT-B or Paramedic certificate may also recertify the wilderness portion of their WEMT with this course.A $250 deposit is required to complete registration. The price increases by $25 after Nov 1, 2014. Camping in the Rec is available for an additional $50.

Wilderness First Responder - December 27-2


WFRCertWilderness First Responder (WFR) is the ideal medical training for outdoor educators, guides, search and rescueteam members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments.A $250 deposit is required to complete registration. The price increases by $35 after Nov 14, 2014. Camping in the Rec is available for an additional $50.
