New from Adventure Recreation: UAB Outfitters!
What is Outfitting? We deliver the boat to the river, you do the paddling!
You can reserve a boat and enjoy the river with our gear. Our staff will be meeting guest at the Cahaba River take-out many weekend dates throughout March and April, spring of 2015. Our staff will drive guest from the take-out to the put-in and assist them in launching our boat down the Cahaba. Once you finish a great time on the river, you will be back to your car and our staff will assist you in exiting the river. Advance reservations are encouraged but not required for specific dates. Reservations and information about shuttle times can be gained by calling (205) 996-4913. Our outfitting package includes canoe or kayak rentals, life jackets, paddles and a shuttle from the take-out to the put-in for one run of the designated section. Most outfitting will be done on the Cahaba River from Grants Mill Road to Old Overton Road about a 7.5 mile stretch of class I paddling.

Outfitter Pricing:
$50 per 2 person canoe or tandem kayak
$30 per single kayak
Shuttle only $10. (For privately owned boats.)
**Shuttles are done only in conjunction with other boat rentals.**

Palisades Park: rock climbing, AL – Oct 26 (Sun)


CLIMBING WEBWant to try your climbing skills somewhere other than the UAB Rockwall? This is the perfect opportunity to see what outdoor climbing is all about. Palisades is the perfect place for climbers of all skill levels to get comfortable top rope climbing. Located in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, the scenery will be nothing short of spectacular. So bring a friend down to the Outdoor Pursuits Office as you come sign up for this adventure.

Palisades Park: rappelling, AL – Oct 26 (Sun)


RAPPELLINGWEBLocated in the foothills of the Southern Appalachians, Palisades Park is one of Blount County's "best kept secrets." Spend the day rappelling down some of Palisades' many sandstone and limestone cliffs. Certified staff will provide training and manage safety.

Mount Rogers: backpacking, VA – Nov 21-25


MtRogers WEBBackpack in the beautiful Mount Rogers National Recreation Area to the highest point in Virginia. Mount Rogers is located along the Appalachian Trail, making it a popular destination for hikers. We will mingle with wild ponies as we backpack through thick spruce-fir forests and across open grassy balds.These trails are suitable for all levels of backpacking ability.

Colorado: skiing, CO – Dec 13-21


ColoradoSkiing-WEBHead to Colorado this winter break and ski at Keystone and Arapahoe Basin. Covering three mountains, with 3,148 acres of skiable terrain, 131 trails of varying difficulty, and offering night skiing, Keystone is an incredible place to ski for anyone from beginners to experts! Just up the road from Keystone is Arapahoe Basin, a favorite ski destination of many locals, with runs that span over 2,270 feet vertically, taking skiers over 12,000 feet and above the tree line. Both Keystone and A-Basin offer an abundance of skiing for all levels of ability. The trip includes 4 to 5 days of skiing, and the trip fee covers condo lodging, a season lift pass for Keystone and A-basin, a cross country drive, and ski rentals. Participants are responsible for all meals and clothing. Signups after the pre-trip meeting may be possible with an additional fee.

WFR Recertification - Dec 20-22


WFRe WEBThe Open Recertification course is open to graduates of ALL wilderness medical training courses of 64 hours or longer with a current Wilderness First Responder certification. Successful graduates of this course will receive Wilderness Medical Associates' Wilderness First Responder, Anaphylaxis, and BLS/Healthcare Provider-level CPR certifications. WMA WEMT graduates with a current EMT-B or Paramedic certificate may also recertify the wilderness portion of their WEMT with this course. A $250 deposit is required to complete registration. The price increases by $25 after Nov 1, 2014. Camping in the Rec is available for an additional $50.

Wilderness First Responder - Dec 26 - Jan 1


WFR-WEBWilderness First Responder (WFR) is the ideal medical training for outdoor educators, guides, search and rescue team members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. A $250 deposit is required to complete registration. The price increases by $35 after Nov 14, 2014. Camping in the Rec is available for an additional $50.

Tumbling Rock: Wild Caving, AL - Jan 24 (Sat)


TumblingRock15Tumbling Rock Cave is one of Alabama's best kept secrets! Spend the day on a guided hike through the cave's many passages. Head through the Great Hall of Mysteries to check out Kings Showers, an incredible underground waterfall! Be sure and pack a lunch to eat when you get to the Christmas tree formation.

Sugar Mountain, skiing, NC – Jan 30-Feb 1


SugarMt15Want to try skiing? Here’s a great opportunity for a quick break at the start of the semester. Sugar Mountain offers numerous runs for all skill levels, including a one and a half mile run with a vertical drop of 1,200 ft. Beginners can enjoy a variety of runs like Easy Street or Low Flying Mile, while more experienced skiers can advance their skills on more challenging runs like Boulder Dash and Whoopdedoo. The trip fee covers transportation, hotel lodging, lift tickets, and ski rentals. Participants are responsible for meals and clothing.

Climbing Competition – Feb 7 (Sat)


ClimbingComp15Come and join us for the UAB 5th Annual Wall Crawl Climbing Competition. Climbers of all ages and abilities can come and show their skills. The competition will be divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced brackets for both male and female. Competition will feature both bouldering and top-rope climbing. The champions of each division will get to pick from our selection of great prizes.

Sand Rock: rock climbing, AL – Mar 7 (Sat)


SandRock15Come and join us for a great climbing trip designed for climbers of all skill levels. This is an opportunity for the beginner to experience outdoor climbing in the top rope environment and for an experienced climber to climb at one of Alabama’s best climbing locations. This sandstone climbing area includes a series of tall boulders strewn along the side of the mountain varying in height from 30 feet to 90 feet. The trip will be run by experienced UAB trip leaders and a certified rock climbing guide. Equipment is included in the cost of the trip. So come and join us on the rocks and have a great experience.

Fontana, Smoky Mountains: canoe & backpacking, NC – Apr 10-12


Fontana15Canoe across beautiful Fontana Lake to the town of Proctor, a ghost town abandoned when Fontana Lake flooded the road leading to the town. Explore the remains of Proctor, then backpack up a trail surrounded by vibrant spring foliage along a cascading mountain stream.

Great Smoky Mountains NP: backpacking, NC – Apr 30-May 3


SmokeyMt15Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a hiker's paradise with over 800 miles of maintained trails ranging from short leg-stretchers to treks that require backcountry camping. The Smokies offer a great getaway in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains complete with diverse plant and animal life and beautiful views of waterfalls. Transportation, equipment, skilled leaders, and park fees are included in the cost of the trip.
