American Red Cross Lifeguard
Training

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies, and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. The course content and activities will prepare participants to make appropriate decisions about the care to provide in an aquatic emergency and a medical emergency.

The blended learning format is used which requires completion of a total of 7 hours of online learning throughout the class. The instructor led portions will total approximately 20 hours.

Certification is valid for 2 years from date of last scheduled class. Certification is not guaranteed. Participants must attend all classes, be able to perform the skills competently and pass the written portions with 80% or better score.

Participants must be 15 years of age on the last scheduled day of class.

There is an initial pretest of swimming skills performed on the first scheduled day of class which consists of:
  • 300 yard  continuous swim
  • Treading water without the use of hands for 2.5 minutes
  • Jump into water, swim 25 yards, dive to 8 foot depth, pick up 10 lb. brick and swim it back to starting point 25 yards.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Training

This class will train potential Lifeguard Instructors how to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course and its accompanying components. Attendance is required at all scheduled sessions unless previous arrangements have been made with the Instructor. Participation in the class does not guarantee certification, individuals must be able to successfully pass a written and a skills test, as well as demonstrate the responsibility and maturity to teach potential Lifeguards and represent the American Red Cross.

Prerequisites:
- 17 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of class
- Possess a current American Red Cross or equivalent Lifeguard Certification
- Be able to successfully demonstrate all lifeguarding skills and swim tests

Standard First Aid/CPR/AED/Adult & Child

This American Red Cross class will teach the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed. Participants will learn to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies.
The traditional classroom program is a 6 hour long course.
The updated blended learning format (online learning with instructor-led skill session) formats requires a 3 hour online learning section which must be completed 2 days prior to the scheduled date of class. Classroom portion is a two hour review and hands on skill based session. Certification is valid for 2 years from date of class.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer/Healthcare Provider

American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program trains professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. Participants will learn proper use of a resuscitation mask, a bag-valve mask, AED as well has how to perform two-person CPR.

The traditional classroom program is a 6 hour long course.
The updated blended learning format (online learning with instructor-led skill session) requires a 3 hour online learning section which must be completed 2 days prior to the scheduled date of class. Classroom portion is a two hour review and hands on skill based session. Certification is valid for 2 years from date of class.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Training
UAB Students and Members  - $60

The purpose of this American Red Cross course is to train swim instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue, Personal Water Safety, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics. The class is approximately 30 hours long taught by a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer. Attendance is required at all scheduled classes. Particpation in the class does not guarantee certification, individuals must be able to successfull pass a written and a skills test.

Prerequisites:
- Participants msut possess the following American Red Cross Level 4 competencies or equivalent
- Front Crawl 25 yards
- Elementary Backstroke 25 yards
- Breaststroke 15 yeards

Online Portions will need to be completed. A computer or tablet with internet access will be needed to complete this class. Use a phone to complete the online portions is not acceptable.

Participants must be 16 years of age on the last scheduled day of class.

Certification is valid for 2 years from date of the class.

Wilderness First Responder

Course Only - $520
Course with Lodging - $620
Conducted by the Wilderness Medical Associates International at the UAB Campus Recreation Center, the Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the definitive course in medical training for outdoor educators, guides, SAR team members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including all of the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. The 5-day format is for individuals and sponsors with less time available for on-site training and requires 25 hours of pre-course preparation.

Open Recertification for Wilderness First Responder
Course Only - $360
Course with Lodging - $410
The Open Recertification course is open to graduates of all wilderness medical training courses of 64 hours or longer with a current Wilderness First Responder certification. Successful graduates of this course will receive Wilderness Medical Associates’ Wilderness First Responder, Anaphylaxis, and BLS/Healthcare Provider-level CPR certifications. WMA WEMT graduates with a current EMT-B or Paramedic certificate may also recertify the wilderness portion of their WEMT with this course.
