Overview:
Lecture overview: This lecture will discuss eating habits of our fast paced lifestyle and provide healthy options for packing your food. In this lecture you will discuss common eating habits and healthier ways to supplement those habits.

Fitness Showcase Series - Spring 2016


The Fitness Showcase series will present various topics related to exercise. Each Fitness Showcase will break down a specific exercise to explain the muscles that are being utilized, correct body alignment and form, programming for different goals, and provide other exercises that can be combined to increase adaptation.

Each Fitness Showcase will take place on the first Wednesday of every month on the fitness floor from 4:00 - 5:00pm. Below is a list of the fitness showcases scheduled for the fall.

Foam Rolling - February 3, 2016
  • Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release (SMR) stretching technique. This popular stretching technique is used to help correct muscle imbalances, reduce trigger points, and inhibit overactive musculature. Foam rolling can be used on various muscles of the body for both the warm-up phase and/or cool down phase of your workout. Learning how to use foam rollers correctly can be very beneficial to muscle recovery and injury prevention. Come check out the different ways to use this fitness tool.
Kettlebell - March 2, 2016
  • A kettlebell is a flat-bottomed, sometimes cast iron ball that contains a single handle and isused for exercise. Kettlebell training may require more strength and coordination than more traditional weight-lifting techniques, as well as increased recruitment of muscle fibers from stabilizers and prime movers. Kettlebell exercises can contain 2 hand, single arm, hand-to-hand, and catch-and-release swinging movements. Although these movements require much more skill, neuromuscular control, and dynamic strength, there are many benefits of using kettlebells in your workout routine.
Bosu Ball - April 6, 2016
  • A BOSU ("Both Sides Up") Ball is an inflated rubber hemisphere attached to a solid plastic surface used in exercise to focus on balance and stability. BOSU balls allow the ability to increase intensity of your workout by decreasing the stability. Not only does using a BOSU ball during exercise increase neuromuscular control, balance, stability, and strength, but it can also aid in injury prevention and rehabilitation. Come check out how you can challenge yourself even more with incorporation BOSU exercises in your daily workout routine.
Heart Rate Training - May 4, 2016
  • Many People like to know how hard they are working while exercising whether it is high intensity or low intensity. Heart rate training is an efficient way to monitor overall cardiovascular health and fitness. It involves two different methods of calculating target heart rate to determine intensity level. At this training, participants will learn how to check pulse at two different locations, calculate heart rate in beats-per-minute (BPM), and learn formulas that will assist in calculating desired intensity.

One-on-One Health Coaching and Counseling


Looking for a bit of extra advice or simply just need an accountability partner to assist you with all your health, activity, and weight-loss goals?  The UAB Campus Recreation Center and Wellness Catering is now offering individualized personal health coaching.  Meet with our certified Health Coach and begin your lifestyle transformation today.

Details & Policies:
  • The UAB Campus Recreation Center does not offer registered dietician services at this time. Health Coaching and Counseling is not a licensed dietician service.  Prescribing of diets, calorie intake, or medications is not within our scope of practice.  However, in scheduling an appointment with a Health Coach, you will receive recommendations and pointers on current diet choices, nutrition, and activity levels. 
  • To schedule an appointment with the Health Coach, please email fitness@uab.edu at least 48 hours in advance.
  • The initial meeting is free; all follow up packages must be purchased at Membership Services.
  • Proof of purchase is necessary at the initial follow-up meeting in the form of a receipt.
  • All members and non-members are eligible to schedule and register for appointments.
  • Cancelling appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance from the scheduled appointment time.  Failure to cancel 24 hours in advance will result in losing that scheduled appointment.
  • Refunds are not available.

Small Group Presentations and Trainings


Are you a corporate business looking to schedule your next staff retreat or training? Or are you a professor simply wanting to schedule a presentation for your class?  Either way Campus Recreation and Wellness Catering want to work with you at your next program or event!  Schedule a presentation, demonstration, training, or workshop focused around any health, wellness, or fitness topic and we will cater it to fit your needs.  Call or email the Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness at 205-996-6994 or fitness@uab.edu today!

Details & Policies:

  •  Scheduling your small group presentation and training must be made at least two weeks in advance of your preferred program date.
  •  Availability and services are not guaranteed and may be subject to change.
  • All small group presentations and trainings are free, unless outside travel is required or the scheduling of a fitness staff instructor is necessary.
  • Outside travel is considered, but not limited to; any destination that is held off UAB main campus property or for any corporate business locations.
  • Payment must be completed 24 hours in advance of the scheduled program.  Payment will be accepted at our Membership Services desk only.
  • Refunds are not available after payment is received.
  • Cancellations or rescheduling of program sessions must be made 24-48 hours in advance.  Failure to cancel before that time will result in loss of refund if applicable.

Personal Training

Do you want to get back into shape or simply looking to kick start a new workout?  Personal Training is the service for you!  Here at the UAB Campus Recreation Center we offer a variety of Personal Training packages for both students, members, and non-members.  Check out our Personal Training now for complete pricing, packaging, and details.

Complete Fitness Assessments

Fitness Assessments provide individuals with their baseline measurements of blood pressure, body composition, cardio fitness, muscular endurance, strength, and flexibility.  The results of these tests are reviewed by a certified Personal Trainer and are used to help personalize a tailored workout plan specifically for you.  To schedule your Fitness Assessment please complete the Health History Questionnaire as well as the Fitness Assessment Form prior to the appointment and email them to the Graduate Assistant of Fitness and Wellness, Jimmy Mszanski, at mszanski@uab.edu


Details & Policies:
  • Fitness Assessments are required by anyone participating in personal training and are included in the session packages. 
  • Appointments will take about 45-60 minutes and will be held in Studio V with a certified Personal Trainer.
  • Proof of purchase is required by showing of receipt.
  •  Clients are requested to wear comfortable athletic clothing, shorts and T-shirt. 
  • The completed Health History Questionnaire is required prior to beginning the Fitness Assessment.
  • Cancellations and rescheduling of Fitness Assessment must made 24 hours in advance to the scheduled appointment.  Failure to cancel or reschedule will result in the loss of your appointment.
  • Refunds are not available.

Massage Therapy


Celebrate a little YOU time by scheduling yourself a massage today! We offer a variety of massage styles such as swedish, neuromuscular, sports and deep tissue to provide the perfect relaxation for you. For more information about session packages and how to schedule your massage click HERE!

Details & Policies:
  • Please schedule all your massage therapy appointments at least 24-48 hours in advance using the online booking system.
  • Upon scheduling your appointment please provide the following information in order for us to best meet your needs:Appointments are available based upon the therapists' schedules availability.
    • Male or female therapist preference
    • Length of appointment preferred
    • Days and times available 
  • Prior to appointments booking an appointment, proof of purchase must be made available. All payment for massage sessions can be made with Membership Services. Once payment is made, please use our online booking sysytem.
  • If the scheduled appointment is your first appointment scheduled at the UAB Campus Recreation Center the following paperwork must be completed and given to your massage therapist at your first appointment:
    • Massage Therapy General Health Questionnaire
    • Massage & Bodywork Intake Form
    • Confidential Health History
    • Post Massage Evaluation
  • Cancellation and rescheduling of appointments must be made 24 hours in advance in order to avoid loss or refund.
  • Failure to cancel or reschedule your appointment will result in loss of refund and session.
  • Massage appointments are non-refundable.
  • All massage appointments will take place in our quiet, spacious massage room located in our Wellness Suite on the first level of the Campus Recreation Center.
