There are many advantages to using the UAB CRCT's indoor climbing wall when compared to outdoor climbing. You do not need to be concerned about rain, sleet, snow, or how hot or cold it may be. You also have access to a staff that is well equipped to help with any issues that may arise. The most significant advantage to indoor climbing, though, may be the variety. New routes and problems are set often to ensure that our patrons always have something new and challenging to look forward to.
The indoor climbing wall is an Entre-Prises Imprint wall with over 1500 square feet of climbing surface. The wall stands at 36 feet high and 43 feet wide, containing both top-rope routes and bouldering problems for climbers of all skill levels. The wall leans out creating an overhang in many areas, which adds a challenge as it requires you to develop arm strength and technique in order to master some of the more difficult routes.
Our climbing routes are set and rated by our highly qualified staff using the Yosemite Decimal System. Routes and boulder problems are marked with colored tape to guide you through the problem. Although you are not required to follow the set routes, they are there to provide a challenge for those who seek one. Currently, the easiest route on our wall is a 5.6, while the easiest bouldering problem is a VB (beginner). As you get used to climbing you may choose to follow more challenging routes or problems to build your skills and strength.
Belaying classes are offered at least once a week, during fall and spring semesters. If you are not certified and don't have a partner, our knowledgeable staff is available whether you need a belay or just a little advice. However, you do not always need a belay if you want to climb as you have the option of bouldering.
The wall is open for climbing seven days a week with an experienced staff on hand to assist you. There is no additional fee to climb. All equipment, including shoes and harnesses are provided free of charge to both members and their guests.
