Wellness Catering: Health that's going places!

Wellness Catering is a program designed to cater recreation-related topics to the UAB community. Presented by a recreational professional for $50 an hour in a small-group setting--topics vary, covering a wide range of fitness and wellness themes. Departments have the opportunity to pick a topic to be presented at staff meetings, lunch groups or a time of your choice. Choose a topic from the a la carte menu.

Nutrition Basics

This informational seminar addresses various nutrition topics allowing plenty of time for your questions. Presented by a registered dietician, you will learn the basics of how to introduce healthy nutrition into your daily life.

Exercising 101 (How to develop an exercise plan) 

We all know that exercise can improve overall health and help us lose weight, but did you know that it can also give you more energy, help you stay focused at work and improve your sleep? Many people are not sure where to begin when creating an exercise regimen. This class takes participants through putting together a simple exercise plan that you are guaranteed to stick with!


Camping for Beginners 

If you are new to the outdoors adventures or thinking about taking your first camping trip, this class is a must. Discussion topics will include wilderness tips, checklists and common mistakes. Participants will go through a "virtual camping trip" beginning with gearing up, finding a campsite, setting up and breaking down camp and ending with unpacking and storing your gear at home. (1hr minimum needed)


Fitness Specials
Free Weights Exercises (Demonstration) 

Free weights are often viewed as intimidating exercise equipment, but when used properly, can be an effective way of improving strength and fitness. Overcome your fear and learn the benefits of using free weights as well as simple exercises to do at home or in the gym. This class is appropriate for all fitness levels.


Stability Ball Exercises (Demonstration) 

This versatile piece of equipment is easy to use and can provide a challenge to your workout. It is used to strengthen the abs and back and increase stability. This session teaches how to select a stability ball that is right for you. Through demonstrations, you will be shown a variety of exercises and uses for the ball. This class is appropriate for all fitness levels.


Pilates (Demonstration) 

Pilates is a conditioning mat workout designed to stretch and strengthen your body. This technique coordinates breathing and movement while you work against the resistance of your own body weight to improve your core strength. Stability balls and resistance bands will be incorporated into this class which is appropriate for all fitness levels.

Dude, there's sand in my eggs (Cooking outdoors) 

You are out in the middle of the woods on a camping trip. You set up camp and now it's time to figure out dinner. Where do you even begin? This presentation addresses simple tips for cooking in the outdoors. You will take home clear cut instructions as well as tons of advice on how to purchase, pack, prepare and clean up dinners outdoors.


Why is my sleeping bag wet? (Where & how to set up camp) 

Pitching a tent in the outdoors is an art! If you are planning on going camping, you need to know what to look for when finding a location for setting up camp in order to stay dry. This sessions details simple steps for choosing a campsite, setting up a tent and breaking camp without leaving a trace.


Why do I feel lopsided? (How to pack a backpack) 

The temptation to bring all of the comforts of a hotel when packing your backpack is often overwhelming, but do it once and you'll never do it again. Every pound you put in the pack will make a difference when loaded on your back. This session offers practical advice on proper techniques and how to lighten the load when packing. You will learn what you really need, and what you can do with out.


My stomach doesn't feel so good (Water purification & sanitary habits) 

If you plan to use water from a natural source while camping, it is essential to properly purify. Purifying is simple, but skipping this step can lead to stomach cramps, discomfort or other health problems. Learn different methods and the simple steps to purifying water before drinking or cooking with it.
