About the Program

The goal of the Freshman Biology Scholarship Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is to advance the education, research training, and personal development of undergraduate students who have the potential to achieve distinction in the field of Biology, as well as become outstanding leaders in their careers and professions.

One year of support is provided for 10 incoming freshmen students ($1,500 each) working toward a bachelor’s degree in Biology in the form of a scholarship.

Eligibility and Conditions of Support

Incoming freshman who will be enrolled in full-time study as a Biology Major at UAB are eligible for consideration for the Freshman Biology Scholarship. Awards are highly competitive and will be given to students who are in the top 20% of their graduating class, a score of 25 or greater on the ACT, and show leadership skills and academic potential for research.

Application Criteria

  • A minimum ACT score of 25
  • Top 20% of high school graduating class
  • Indication of a completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application

All applications will be screened by the UAB Freshman Biology Scholarship Selection Committee, which will also select the finalists. The best undergraduate scholars will be selected based on their potential for a successful career in science and outstanding leadership in their chosen profession.

Support

Freshman Academic Year: $1,500 for one year for 10 students annually.

How to Apply

  1. Apply to UAB no later than August 1st. Download the Application Form by clicking here.
  2. Students whose designated major is Biology and have the minimum ACT and GPA required for the Freshman Biology Scholarship Program will be emailed an application in late December.
  3. All required application materials will be due by August 5th.
    1. One letter of recommendation from a science teacher.
    2. A letter stating your class rank from your high school counselor.
    3. Response to two questions (two page limit, double spaced):
      1. Why should you be considered for this scholarship?
      2. What are your career goals?
  4. Notification will be sent to all applicants by August 20th.
  5. Deadline to accept is August 30th.
