Currently, I am pursuing my PhD here at UAB using Drosophila melanogaster to understand epigenetics and chromatin.

Tandy Petrov. My specific area of research focuses on the Heterochromatin Protein 1 (HP1) family, a highly conserved, non-histone, chromosomal protein family that is involved in many aspects of gene regulation. I am primarily interested in the interactions of HP1B with the other somatic homologs, HP1a and HP1C. My investigations will hopefully show how their interactions contribute to overall chromatin structure and gene expression.
