Chemistry Scholars Program

"In the Chemistry Scholars Program, I am able to interact with professors and fellow peers outside of class while building a stronger foundation in Chemistry through critical understanding of the topics that I am entrusted to teach."

- Pratik Talati, as a 3rd Year Chemistry Scholar, currently attending Vanderbilt University in the MD/PhD program.

Qualified incoming freshmen are eligible to apply to be a fellow in the Chemistry Scholars’ Program. Students who declare an interest in majoring in chemistry and have a 3.5 or greater high school GPA and composite ACT score of 26 or greater are invited to send a letter of application by February 1. Be sure to check the date with the Department of Chemistry each year.

Program Benefits

As a chemistry scholar, students

  • receive individual mentoring to help develop them into highly qualified professionals;
  • do undergraduate research alongside faculty members, and often those in the medical side of campus;
  • work closely with chemistry faculty mentors;
  • participate in the undergraduate teaching program as peer teachers; and
  • join a leadership cadre of chemistry majors.

The peer teaching involves shadowing an experienced peer teacher during the freshman year and then serving as a peer teacher for recitation and laboratory sections during the sophomore, junior and senior years. Peer teaching is an extremely valuable educational experience, providing the chemistry scholars with an in depth understanding of chemistry and training them to work effectively in groups.

Support

Fellowships are four-year awards that provide each chemistry scholar with a stipend of up to $1600 in their first year, and up to $3200 each of the sophomore, junior and senior years as long as the scholar maintains a 3.0 GPA in chemistry, is a full-time chemistry major and is in good academic standing at UAB.

How to Apply

If you are interested in being considered for a Chemistry Scholar Fellowship, please complete the StudentApplication, and send it with a resume and cover letter stating interest in the program, your background in Chemistry, and how a fellowship would have a positive impact on your undergraduate educational experience. Your high school chemistry teacher should also complete the TeacherNom07, and all materials should be submitted to the address specified on the form. Fellowship awards will be made based on academic qualifications, essay, and level of interest. Please note that Chemistry Scholar Fellowships may be in addition to other scholarship awards, and that they do require a small time commitment to participate in the peer-teaching program.

Chemistry scholars have enjoyed a successful undergraduate life at UAB and have moved on to medical schools and graduate schools. Further information can be obtained from the UAB Department of Chemistry, (205) 934-4747.
