Bellis, Peter J.

Peter Bellis (Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University, 1984) teaches courses in American literature and culture. He taught at the University of Miami from 1984 until 2007, coming to UAB as Professor and Department Chair in July 2007. He has published two books—No Mysteries Out of Ourselves: Identity and Textual Form in the Novels of Herman Melville (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1990) and Writing Revolution: Aesthetics and Politics in Antebellum American Literature (University of Georgia Press, 2003)—as well as articles on Melville, Hawthorne, Whitman, Brockden Brown, and Charlotte Brontë. His current research examines urban space, politics, and literary representation in 18th- and 19th-century America.
