Michael Sowder is a poet, writer, and professor at Utah State University, Logan, Utah, where he lives at the foot of the Bear River Mountains with his wife, the writer Jennifer Sinor, and their two boys, Aidan and Kellen. His first book of poetry, The Empty Boat, won the 2004 T. S. Elliot Award, and his chapbook, A Calendar of Crows, won the inaugural New Michigan Press Award. Whitman's Ecstatic Union, his study of Whitman's poetry, was published by Routledge in 2005.

Exploring themes of wilderness, poetics, fatherhood, and spirituality, Sowder writes frequently for Buddhist the magazine Shambhala Sun. His poetry has appeared in such venues as American Life in Poetry, Five Points, and The New York Times Online.
