Organization and Structure
The UAB College of Arts and Sciences was founded in 2009 with the integration of the schools of Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Natural Science, and Mathematics. The college includes 19 academic departments offering 58 baccalaureate majors and 36 programs leading to a masters or doctoral degree. Nearly every student pursuing a baccalaureate degree at UAB takes classes in the College of Arts and Sciences where the majority of general education core curriculum courses are offered.
Our innovative structure ensures that the experts in the college coordinate and collaborate in other academic areas to ensure the best preparation for students pursuing careers. This unique configuration is emblematic of UAB’s interdisciplinary, collaborative culture, strengthening cooperation between departments and programs for excellence in research and scholarship where students can thrive in an open environment with a bold, innovative approach to education.
The dean is the senior academic and administrative leader of the college. The successful management of the college is made possible through a multi-layered staff that works directly or indirectly with the dean.
Associate deans provide supervisory support in the areas of academic affairs, curriculum, advising and student support services, research, scholarship and creative performance, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
The professoriate of the college includes more than 350 full time faculty members, approximately 59% percent of whom are tenured. More than 85% of courses are taught by full time faculty members. The College supplements its instructional capacity taking advantage of the expertise of practicing professionals in the greater Birmingham area who can bring their unique experience to the classroom in applied and special topic areas as part-time instructors.
More than 7,000 students pursue degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students enjoy the social and academic benefits of studying in one of the most diverse universities in the United States.
