Our colleague Jim Ward passed away on Monday, March 25, 2013. His wife Ana has created the Dr. James Robert Ward, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund in recognition of Jim's passion for mathematics and the education of mathematics students.

Jim received the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966, the Master of Arts degree in 1973, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1975 all from the University of South Florida. He served on the faculties at the University of Texas-Pan American (1976-1979), the University of Alabama (1979-1989) and UAB since 1989. In 2010 Jim became Professor Emeritus.

Jim’s international reputation led to invitations for research visits at Louvain (Belgium), Trieste (Italy), Granada (Spain), Torino (Italy), and Santiago (Chile), as well as a large number of invitations to conferences and colloquia. He won several grants from the National Science Foundation to further his research and other scholarly work, has published numerous articles in his field of differential equations and nonlinear analysis, and has supervised several students on their path to the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

The Dr. James Robert Ward, Jr. Memorial Award was created to support graduate students in Mathematics in recognition of outstanding achievements. Preference is given to students in Differential Equations or Mathematical Biology, two areas of Mathematics that were particularly important to Dr. Ward.
