The UAB Department of Music . . . where you can create, perform, and inspire!

Welcome to the UAB Department of Music. As you explore our website, you will find evidence of a comprehensive and diverse music community comprised of talented students and gifted faculty. Through its many classes, concerts, recitals, lectures, masterclasses, and symposia, the UAB Department of Music is an important part of Alabama’s cultural community, presenting over 150 public events each year. Birmingham is home to the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Alabama Ballet, Opera Birmingham, Chamber Music Society, and the acclaimed Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center – where many of our department’s concerts and events are presented (http://www.alysstephens.uab.edu/).

All in all – for the aspiring musician, UAB Department of Music is a great place to live, learn, grow and succeed.

The Department offers three undergraduate degrees, the Bachelor of Arts in Music (General), the Bachelor of Arts in Music with a Concentration in Music Technology, and the Bachelor of Arts in Music with a Concentration in Music Education (Choral and Instrumental Tracks). With one graduate degree, the Master of Arts in Arts Education with a Specialization in Music Education, students are offered additional study and certification. Students of other majors may also opt to minor in music or music technology. All students, regardless of major, are welcome to audition and participate in one or more of our many ensembles.

As a full member of the National Association of Schools of Music, we are dedicated to the complete musical education of each of our students. One of our recent graduates, Kseniia Polstiankina, a native of the Ukraine, recently won 1st place at both the state and regional piano division of the Music Teachers National Association and placed 3rd in the national competition. A student of Dr. Yakov Kasman, Kseniia travelled to the United States to attend UAB and pursue her piano study. She also accompanied the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and Opera. Kseniia is just one of many students who have turned their passion for music into a life-long pursuit of the art of music.
