UAB's Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk Appointed Governor of Alabama Chapter of NATS

Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk, Director of UAB Opera, has been appointed the Governor for the Alabama chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). Her duties will include coordinating the Artist Award competition for the chapter, serving as co-chair of the state membership of NATS, and serving on the board of Southeastern Regional NATS.

Dr. Hurst-Wajszczuk currently serves NATS on the national level on the membership committee and recently coordinated the national semi-finals and finals of the NATSAA competition at the national convention in Orlando. She also co-chairs the Opera Scenes Competition committee for the National Opera Association.

A frequent guest clinician, Hurst-Wajszczuk will be a featured presenter at the NATS Winter Workshop in January 2013. She offered master classes and workshops at Florida Gulf Coast University, East Carolina University, the University of South Carolina, and the Tampa Bay NATS Fall Workshop last October. An active recitalist, upcoming concert appearances include Elizabethtown College, the University of Kentucky-Lexington, and Fort Smith, Arkansas. A winner of a 2012-13 Faculty Development Grant to expand early music offerings at UAB, she plans to launch UAB's Collegium Musicum series with an inaugural concert in February 2013.
Under Hurst-Wajszczuk's direction, UAB Opera has achieved national recognition. Following a finalist placement in the Opera Scenes Competition hosted by the National Opera Association (NOA) in 2010, UAB Opera placed first in the NOA Opera Production Competition with her 2011 production of Britten's The Burning Fiery Furnace. This fall she will direct Lehar's The Merry Widow, with performances November 15 and 17 in Sirote Theatre.
