UAB's Kasman to Perform in France with Orchestre Lamoureux

UAB Professor of Piano and Artist in Residence Yakov Kasman will be featured in two performances of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with French Orchestre Lamoureux and conductor Emmanuel Leducq-Barome. The first performance takes place at Theatre des Champs-Elysees, Sunday, January 29, followed by a second performance in Rungis at the Theatre de Rungis, Sunday, January 31. Yakov Kasman is a Silver Medalist of the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and concertizes throughout the world with orchestras, as a recitalist, and as a collaborative pianist.

UAB’s Panion to Speak on Next Generation of Musicians at NAMM

henry_panion_011812UAB University Professor Henry Panion III, Ph.D., will be one of two keynote speakers for the 2012 College Music Society Summit, Jan. 20-21 at the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) convention in Anaheim, Calif.

The 2012 Summit’s focus is “Untapped Collaborations: Synergies between the Music Products Industry and the Education of the Next Generation of Musicians.” More than 90,000 people are expected to attend the convention.

New Work for String Orchestra by UAB’s Price to Have World Premiere

A new work by UAB Music Assistant Professor William Price, D.M.A., will have its world premiere Jan. 22, 2012, by the Louisiana Sinfonietta, a professional string orchestra based in Baton Rouge, La.

The newly commissioned work, “Imprint,” will be performed at 2 p.m. in the Louisiana State University Recital Hall. Price also will give a lecture on his music to the LSU Composers Forum Jan. 23.

In 2008, Price was named the Music Teachers National Association Composer of the Year. He teaches courses in music theory, music technology and aural skills in the UAB Department of Musc and serves as coordinator of composition for the Alabama Music Teachers Association.

UAB Opera program honored by National Opera Association

opera_storyUAB Opera wins first prize in a National Opera Association competition. A DVD of the 2010 performance, Benjamin Britten’s “The Burning Fiery Furnace,” was awarded first prize in the 2011 Opera Production Competition, Division I, sponsored by the NOA. The award will be presented to UAB Opera Director Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk, D.M.A., at the NOA’s national convention gala banquet in January 2012 in Memphis, Tenn.

The UAB Marching Blazers' Exhibition Show at the 2011 Hoover Invitational Marching Band Festival


Since 1996, the Marching Blazers have thrilled thousands of fans with exciting performances that have helped make this one of the great college bands of the South.  The pride and tradition of excellence continue into the 21st century as the Marching Blazers press forward on the journey to present the highest level of musical and visual pageantry.

In addition to sections of brass, woodwinds, and marching and pit percussion, The Marching Blazers auxiliary units include the Blazerettes dance line, majorettes, and colorguard.  A placement audition is required for membership and part assignment.  Blazerettes, majorettes, colorguard, and drum majors are selected by audition in the spring of each year.
