UAB Department of Physics Scholarships - Spring 2015

The Department of Physics will provide scholarships for two selected UAB undergraduate Physics majors - a Junior and a Senior. The amount of each scholarship will be $1500, to be applied to UAB tuition and fees. Any excess may be applied to books and other academic expenses upon approval by the Physics Undergraduate Program Director. Students are especially encouraged to enroll in a Physics course that they otherwise could not manage. The Junior award will be named the Physics Faculty Scholarship and the Senior award, the H. Tiit Tohver Scholarship.

Eligibility. An eligible candidate must be enrolled as a UAB undergraduate student, having been a UAB Physics major for at least one full year. Students must be classified a Junior or Senior by UAB as of January 2, 2015, and enrolled full-time for the 2015 Spring semester. Students with a double major, including Physics, may apply.

Selection Consideration. The selection will be based primarily on a candidate’s college grade point average, courses taken, and UAB Physics-faculty evaluation of student performance and potential for future contributions to the physical sciences. Additional merits, including an appreciation for the sciences demonstrated through recent participation in laboratory research or science events, will also be considered. Such activities are not required to obtain the scholarship.

Award Specifications. Scholarship winners will be provided with $1500 scholarship to be deposited in each student’s UAB account, applied to tuition and fees over a 2-semester period. The Senior awardee should be scheduled to graduate by December 12, 2015, as judged by the courses taken by the student and the Physics Undergraduate Program Director.

Mentoring. Each scholarship recipient will maintain contact with a faculty mentor who will help the student with academic career planning and problem solving.
