All applicants must meet admissions requirements established by the UAB Graduate School; including completion of a Bachelor's degree (or higher), and minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a four-point scale) in junior and senior level course work.

Chat with the Chair on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Dr. David E. Pollio will be available to chat with current and perspective Social Work students to answer questions about the academic program and to provide career advice. Please check the event calendar for cancellations.

Chat with the Chair is a first-come-first serve walk-in session and no appointments required.

An admissions packet will consist of:

  • Academic transcripts with GPAs (note: please have transcripts mailed directly to the UAB Graduate School — transcripts will not be accepted in the Department)
  • Two recommendations, including one academic and one professional (note: please ask individuals to attach formal letters of recommendation to the Graduate School application — recommendation letters will not be accepted in the Department)
  • A professional resume
  • A writing sample answering two specific questions around professionalism, ethics, diversity, and social justice
  • International students will be required to submit scores from the TOEFL
  • The GRE is not required

Admissions Process and Cycle

  • Applications are reviewed by members of the MSW Coordinating Committee, which will include the MSW program director, two Social Work faculty, and an outside reviewer.
  • The MSW program is currently on a rolling admissions cycle which means applications are accepted and reviewed all year.
  • Students are only admitted in the in the Fall and we follow the Graduate School's application deadlines for fall admission.
The application deadline is August 1st. Classes begin in the Fall.

Graduate School Application

Advanced Standing

Students who hold a bachelor of Social Work degree from a BSW program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) may be admitted to the MSW program with advanced-standing status. The required coursework are completed over three semesters (Fall/Spring/Fall).
