Welcome to the Department of Sociology!
We offer a BA in either sociology or social psychology, with planning for a new BS in medical sociology in 2016-17. The Department also has minor programs in sociology, social psychology, and medical sociology. Our undergraduates can participate in the Honors Program and be selected for Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), the national honorary sociology society.
At the graduate level, we offer an MA in sociology and a PhD in medical sociology. It is the only PhD program in sociology in the state of Alabama. We also have an online MA in applied sociology that focuses on using sociology to help solve real world problems and includes a community project. Our students can take advantages of opportunities to be teaching assistants or research assistants on faculty projects, grants, or in various research centers on campus.
The Department of Sociology features faculty who are either teaching specialists or leaders in research in a research-intensive environment. The Social Determinants of Health Core of the Mid-South Transdisciplinary Collaborative Center investigating the health of African Americans in the Mid-South is housed in our department. It is funded by the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) through the Division of Preventive Medicine at UAB and involves the participation of several graduate students, PhD alumni, and faculty.
