Audition Notice for Silent Sky & Hairspray

Theatre UAB is holding auditions for roles in two of our upcoming productions: Silent Sky & Hairspray.


November 27th in Hulsey 312 from 6-10:00 p.m.


Callbacks for Silent Sky will be held on November 28th.

Callbacks for Hairspray will be held immediately after the initial audition on the 27th and on November 28th and 29th. Be prepared to dance.

How to Audition

Sign-up for a time slot on the Department of Theatre callboard (Theatre and Musical Theatre majors are required to audition for both shows).

What to Prepare

Silent Sky

Those auditioning for Silent Sky are asked to prepare a one-minute monologue from the play or of your own choosing.


Those auditioning for Hairspray are asked to prepare a 16-bar cut of a 50’s/60’s song (think Elvis Presley, The Supremes, The Temptations, etc.) Please have your music in a binder and appropriately marked. An accompanist will be provided.

Silent Sky

Henrietta Leavitt (LEH-vit): 30’s, brilliant, meticulous, excited-almost always wearing a period hearing-aid.

Margaret Leavitt: 30’s, homebody, creative, sweet, sister.

Peter Shaw: 30’s, the head astronomer’s apprentice…and the man.

Annie Cannon: 40’s, the leader, terse and sure, grows into a firebrand.

Williamina Fleming: 50’s, smart as a whip and fun, Scottish.



Tracy Turnblad
Our story's unsuspecting protagonist, she is large and in charge. Confident, talented, and incredibly determined. A romantic with a good heart and desire to cut up the dance floor. Always on top of the latest trends.
Gender: Female
Age: 15 to 20
Vocal range: G3-G5

Corny Collins
The charismatic host of the Corny Collins' Show. Good looking and smooth talking, he is a genuinely nice guy both on and off camera.
Gender: Male
Age: 25 to 35
Vocal range: D3-A4

Penny Pingleton
Tracy's best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest girl, but she has good intentions. Bursting to get free of her mother's dominating control, she falls for Seaweed with childlike curiosity.

Age: 15 to 20
Vocal range: A3-G5

Velma Von Tussle
Amber's mother and the director of Corny Collin's show. She is a devious taskmaster and snobby racist. The former Miss Baltimore Crabs will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing.

Age: 45 to 55
Vocal range: G3-E5

Amber Von Tussle
Link's girlfriend and Tracy's nemesis. She is pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist. Can't dance but is expected to win Miss Baltimore Hairspray. Always feels the need to be the center of attention.

Link Larkin
The star heartthrob on Corny Collins' show. He is extremely attractive and talented. Hoping to get his big break with a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy.

Seaweed J. Stubbs
Tracy's classmate and friend, who is discriminated against due to his skin color. He is cocky but surprisingly lovable. Talented in song and dance. He falls for Penny.

Little Inez
Seaweed's little sister and a talented dancer. Tries to audition for The Corny Collins Show but is turned away because of her skin color.

Age: 13‐15

Motormouth Maybelle
Seaweed and Little Inez's mother, she also appears as the Guest DJ on the Corny Collin's Negro Day show. Big, blonde, beautiful and proud of it. She is sassy and confident.

Wilbur Turnblad
Tracy's simpleminded and kind father. He owns a joke shop and supports his daughter in spite of everything else. He also loves his wife, Edna, very much.

Age: 55 to 65
Vocal range: A3-A5

Prudy Pingleton
Penny's strict mother. Very conservative, controlling, and closed minded.
Gender: Female
Age: 40 to 50
Vocal range: D4-B4

Ensemble: Corny Collins' Kids (Tammy, Brad, Brenda, Sketch, Shelley, Etc.); Students; Hookers; Protestors


Silent Sky

Silent Sky will run February 21-25, 2018. Rehearsals will be Monday-Friday, 6-10pm and will begin January 8th.


Hairspray will run April 11-15, 2018. Rehearsals will be six days a week (Monday-Friday, 6-10pm and Saturdays 10-4pm) and will begin January 15th.
