— In October of 2000, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded several top cancer research centers with SPORE grants (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) for breast cancer research. UAB, which also hosts a SPORE for Ovarian Cancer, was one of the institutions chosen to focus on translating basic research findings into a clinical setting.
