  • A vibrant foundation enables CLINICAL RESEARCH, including facilities, experienced staff, informatics and study design expertise, recruitment tools, specimen management and shared research laboratories fulfilling pharmacometrics and bionutrition needs, to name a few. Research Units are available to support translational investigation engaging child and adult participation in addition to centrally-located patient rooms dedicated to Phase I Clinical Trials. The Clinical Research Support Program provides a pool of trained, certified research coordinators available to assist investigators with any/all phases of a research study without incurring any long-term administrative commitments to allow specific needs of a project to be met.
    • Bionutrition Unit (UAB)
      The Bionutrition Unit assists with planning and designing the nutritional components of research protocols and can assist with implementing the protocol, recruitment/screening of research participants, and data collection and analysis of dietary intake. Its Metabolic Kitchen provides specially designed meals for participants on both inpatient and outpatient studies to meet protocol requirements.
    • Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD)
      BERD provides clinical and translational investigators access to experienced methodologists with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, outcomes and effectiveness research, and data management. Methodologists are available for consults and collaboration - especially during the critical design and initial implementation phases of projects.
    • Child Health Research Unit (UAB)
      The Unit includes space and equipment, Children’s Hospital- and CCTS-subcontracted services, outreach lab services, and storage of biologic specimens. Staffing is flexible and can include research coordinators, research nurses, and other health professionals based in the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and/or the Clincial Research Support Program (CRSP). The Unit also provides support for study initiation, including study design, regulatory support, and budget preparation through CRSP.
    • Clinical Research Support Program (CRSP)
      CRSP provides a pool of trained, certified research coordinators to assist with study implementation, including interpretation and adherence to regulatory requirements, organizational and budget management, communication with sponsors, internal quality measures, and data management. Resource pooling provides flexibility and limits the need for individual investigators or programs to overstaff to handle sporadic needs.
    • Clinical Research Unit (UAB)
      The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) is an outpatient unit located on the 15th floor of Jefferson Tower. Experienced research nurses work closely with investigators and coordinators to meet the specific needs of each protocol, guided by good clinical practice. The CRU provides a highly efficient and flexible infrastructure that is sustainable through a comprehensive cost-recovery system. Inpatient needs are accomodated through the use of hospital swing beds.
    • Enterprise Data Warehousing Initiative (UAB)
      CCTS Informatics works with Health System Information Services to support the UAB Enterprise Data Warehousing Initiative that provides biomedical investigators with access to clinical data from the Electronic Health Record that is generated and maintained within the UAB Health System. Current data is uploaded daily and historical data is uploaded on a continual basis. CCTS Informatics also interfaces with the Natural Language Processing (NLP) Laboratory of the UAB Department of Computer and Information Sciences and the Health Systems NLP staff. These collaborations are focused on the development of tools and techniques to process the millions of clinical text notes that comprise a significant part of historical health records – making these records available for secondary research and clinical operations.
    • Exercise Medicine Cores (UAB)
      The UAB Center for Exercise Medicine offers a Clinical Exercise Facility which includes approximately 900 feet of exercise training space, a conference room, and two laboratories (the Cardiorespiratory Function Laboratory and the Neuromuscular Function Laboratory). The Center also has a Core Muscle Research Laboratory that provides resources and expertise to analyze muscle tissue and serum specimens, and conduct in vitro experiments in support of exercise-based investigations.
    • Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Shared Facility (UAB)
      This shared facility offers pre-clinical and clinical trial design for PK/PD analyses and sample analysis for drug and/or metabolite quantitation. It also offers assistance with data analysis and interpretation.
    • Pharmacometrics (UAB)
      This resource supports a suite of modeling and simulation software used in the analysis of pharmacometric data, and offers expertise in support of research initiated by outside investigators. Services available include design of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) studies, PK/PD data analysis, development of mathematical models to describe relevant outcome measures, and clinical trial simulations.
    • Phase I Clinical Trials Unit (UAB)
      This 7,950 sq. ft. Unit is located on the 15th floor of Jefferson Tower, adjacent to the existing Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and the sample processing facility. It includes five patient rooms for the administration of novel research agents and the capacity for the administration of standard of care drugs and routine patient infusions - which enhances the nurses’ focus on the care given to the patients receiving Phase I agents.
    • ResearchMatch Recruitment Tool
      The goal of ResearchMatch is to bring together two groups of people - people who would like to participate in research studies and researchers who are looking for people to participate in their studies. It is a free and secure registry that has been developed by major academic institutions across the country.
    • Sample Processing and Analytic Nexus (UAB)
      CCTS Sample Processing offers specimen processing, DNA preparation and cell lines, and analytical capacity. Its staff work closely with investigators to offer “bedside-to-bench” research services for those using the Clinical Research Unit (CRU).
    • Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics
      The National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care was established in 1999 in response to the 1997 Presidential Apology for the USPHS Syphilis Study. This Center is only one of two in the country that focus on bioethics issues related to minority health and the health of underserved communities. Through education and outreach, it seeks to reverse the negative legacy sustained by the USPHS Syphilis Study, still cited as a hindrance to the full participation of African Americans and others in medical care and scientific research.
