Inaugural Epigenetics Retreat

On Wednesday, July 11, 2012 the UAB Heflin Center for Genomic Sciences partnered with the CCTS; the Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Department of Neurobiology; the Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics; the Comprehensive Neuroscience Center; the Comprehensive Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Autoimmunity Center; and the Department of Genetics to host the inaugural UAB Epigenetics Retreat at Volker Hall. More than 165 faculty, staff, and students attended this day-long event, which featured programs on neurobiology, metabolism, the immune system, cancer, and methods and resources. It also included a poster session with eight presenters.Dr. Devin Absher, faculty investigator with the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology.

Speakers represented a range of departments and programs, and included among them Dr. David Sweatt, professor and chair of the Department of Neurobiology; Dr. Bruce Korf, professor and chair, Department of Genetics; Dr. Molly Bray, Director, UAB Heflin Center, and Dr. Devin Absher, faculty investigator with the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. The format of brief, 10-minute lectures followed by ample discussion time was deemed highly effective by attendees.
