Medical Technologist using a microscope to identify abnormal
cells.
In hematology, medical technologists operate and analyze the
results from sophisticated blood cell analyzers. They examine
blood and bone marrow smears under the microscope to detect cell
abnormalities which may indicate the presence of diseases such as
anemia and leukemia. Blood coagulation, called hemostasis, can be
evaluated for the presence of bleeding and clotting disorders or
to monitor a heart patient on anticoagulant therapy. Other body
fluids are examined for the presence of abnormal cells in cases
of knee trauma, pleurisy, or meningitis. A common body fluid
evaluated is urine. Information concerning kidney function,
nutrition, some hereditary disorders and infections can be
detected from the analysis of such fluids.
